Position: Carpenter

Position Type: Full-Time, ongoing

Salary: $79,500 to $82,500 plus superannuation per annum

Location: Campbellfield VIC 3061

Our client is seeking an experienced Carpenter to join their team working on project sites across metropolitan Melbourne.

The Carpenter is responsible for constructing, erecting, installing, renovating and repairing structures and fixtures of timber, plywood, wallboard and other materials, including frameworks, stairways, doorframes, partitions, rafters, cladding and fit-out components. All work is to be completed to drawings and specifications, in accordance with the National Construction Code, relevant Australian Standards and site safety requirements.

The position works under the direction of the Director and is integral to the business delivering its projects on time, to budget and to the required standard of quality.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning, Drawings and Set-out

- Study and interpret architectural drawings, building plans, specifications and building codes to determine materials required, dimensions, installation procedures and work methods.
- Calculate quantities, prepare cutting lists, and set out and mark work areas using measuring and levelling equipment, including laser and dumpy levels.
- Select and order timber and materials, prepare layouts, and check materials received for quantity and quality.

Framing and Structural Carpentry

- Measure, cut and shape timber, plywood, wallboard and other materials, and assemble, nail and fix cut and shaped parts.
- Construct and install building frameworks, including walls and floors, and lay bearers, joists, sub-flooring and floorboards.
- Assemble and erect timber roof framing and roof structures, including rafters.
- Construct doorframes, partitions and stairways.
- Check and verify the level, plumb, square and trueness of structures.

External Carpentry and Installation





- Nail and fix fascia panels and fit exterior wall cladding.
- Install door and window frames, windows, doors, mouldings and associated hardware.

Interior Fit-out and Fixtures

- Assemble prepared timber to form structures and fittings ready for installation.
- Cut and fit wood joints to the required standard of finish.
- Install fixtures and fittings including architraves, skirting, kitchen cupboards and cabinetry, shelving, partitions and wallboard.
- Work with plastic laminates, Perspex and other building materials, and construct portable or demountable structures not necessarily made of timber.

Repairs, Renovation and Maintenance

- Carry out maintenance and repair work on existing structures, inspecting framework, structures and fixtures for damage and repairing or replacing damaged components.
- Repair and refit existing fittings as part of renovation and maintenance works.

Tools, Equipment and Work Areas

- Use hand tools (hammers, chisels, hand planes, hand saws, mitre saws, mitre boxes, spirit levels and measuring tools) and power tools (circular saws, jigsaws, electric sanders, planers, drills, screwdrivers, and nail, pin and staple guns).
- Erect and work safely from scaffolding, trestles and ladders, and use ventilation and extraction equipment where required.
- Operate all carpentry tools and equipment in accordance with safety standards, and maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean, safe and serviceable condition.

Work Health, Safety and Compliance

- Follow site inductions, site rules,



safe work method statements (SWMS) and workplace procedures, and use the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) for each task.
- Identify hazards, assess and control risks, and report incidents and near misses to the Director.
- Carry out work in accordance with the National Construction Code, relevant Australian Standards and workplace health and safety legislation.

Communication and Teamwork

- Liaise with the Director, builders, site supervisors and other tradespeople using correct trade language and terminology.
- Communicate with clients regarding work requirements and work performed.
- Work effectively within a team and unsupervised when required, completing work properly and on time and under pressure where deadlines demand.
- Provide guidance to trades assistants and labourers on site as required.

Requirements:

- AQF Certificate III in Carpentry (or equivalent), or a recognised skills assessment in the occupation of Carpenter.
- At least one (1) year of relevant work experience as a Carpenter.
- Current Construction Induction Card (White Card).
- Sound knowledge of carpentry techniques, timber framing, building materials and construction methods.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, plans and specifications accurately.
- Competence in the secure use of carpentry hand tools, power tools and access equipment.
- Working knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation, the National Construction Code and relevant Australian Standards, including AS 1684 (timber-framed construction).
- English language skills sufficient to communicate effectively with supervisors, tradespeople and clients on site.

Desirable

- Current Australian driver licence.
- Experience on commercial construction projects.
- Working at heights or elevating work platform training.
- Current first aid certificate.
