The Royal Australian Mint (the Mint) is a small government agency working within the Commonwealth Government Portfolio of the Treasury. The Mint is a non-corporate Commonwealth Entity and is listed under the Public Governance Performance and Accountability Act **** (PGPA Act). The Mint is also covered by the Public Service Act **** (Cth) (PS Act).
The Mint makes coins and other minted products to serve the needs of the Australian economy, foreign countries, investors and collectors. We are stewards of a thriving national institution that showcases our nation's stories through the National Coin Collection, and a world-class museum and gallery experience.
The Mint creates public value through a range of coining and minting-related activities. We play a key role in sharing the stories of Australia by recognising significant anniversaries, events, organisations and cultural perspectives through coins.

Coin manufacturing: polishing, laser frosting, 3D engraving, Physical Vapour Deposition hard coating, chrome plating, die inspection and collar manufacture
Production and maintenance: operate and maintain minting critical machines
Coin Sculpting: design coins, medals, medallions, and tokens
Graphic Design: design coin packaging materials, exhibition graphics
Engineering: technical support and manufacturing operations
About the Branch
The Engineering, Assets & Quality (EAQ) Branch uses engineering, asset management, project management and quality assurance expertise to help the whole Mint succeed by making our systems safer, more reliable, more efficient and easier to work in. We support our colleagues, customers, and the public by reducing defects and downtime, improving throughput, enabling new products, and strengthening the processes that shape Australia's coinage. Our purpose is to care for the systems that care for the Mint, and to continuously improve them so people can do their best work.
The EAQ branch includes consists of the following teams:
Process Engineering (PE):
Responsible for ensuring the minting processes are stable, effective, safe, and capable of producing the high-quality products at the required volume.
Product & Tooling Engineering (PTE):
Responsible for design models, specifications and continuous improvement of production tooling and product packaging.
Industrial Engineering (IE):
Responsible ensuring the production systems (mechanical, electrical, automation and digital) are designed, integrated and continuously improved to deliver safe, reliable, efficient and future‐ready contemporary manufacturing capabilities to optimise equipment and material handling performance, automate process, enhance data visibility and enable precision minting at scale.
Project Management Office (PMO):




Responsible for setting the organisational direction through corporate planning, strategic alignment, prioritisation and horizon scanning and administering the work plan to deliver strategic priorities.
Quality Assurance (QA):
Responsible for quality control, defect analysis, precision measurement, and standards compliance.
Asset Management (AM):
Responsible for asset lifecycle and reliability management, technical problem solving and undertaking of major projects.
About the Role
The Senior Engineer/Technician will work in a team of engineers and technicians to deliver complex projects, develop production capability, run process improvement initiatives and support manufacturing activities. The successful candidate will be placed in the team most relevant to their skills, experience and professional interests, however there will be opportunities to work closely with other teams and cross‐skill. A brief description of the three engineering functions is provided below.
A Senior Engineer/Technician in the Industrial Engineering team is responsible for conducting projects to improve existing industrial processes through procurement or internal development of machinery and automation. They will also be providing technical support for the operation of existing production machines and equipment, including mechanical design support for parts and tooling, and assisting operation areas in achieving and maintaining compliance with the relevant machine safety requirements.
A Senior Engineer/Technician in the Product & Tooling Engineering team is responsible for developing and maintaining new coin products and packaging capabilities. They will work collaboratively with the Sales, Marketing and production teams to develop collector and investment products for Mint customers. The role involves connecting marketing requirements with structured trials and experimentation to establish capability, then developing the manufacturing methods and processes with the Processes Engineering team for implementation into the production environment.
Process Engineering
A Senior Engineer/Technician in the Process Engineering team provides production support, process development and continuous improvement across all manufacturing areas. This is achieved by working closely with production teams, implementing Lean and other industry best‐practice methods, providing troubleshooting support, and ensuring established production throughput and product quality targets are maintained.
Industrial Engineering

The key duties of the position include:
Applying Systems Engineering principles to design systems that are safe, functional, and cost effective
Developing documentation to align with established quality, safety, and risk management systems
Presenting information in a variety of formats including presentations and technical reports and conducting effective meetings
Applying Project Management principles to plan, manage and deliver complex projects
Engaging with stakeholders and customers from various backgrounds and technical abilities to gather information, provide updates, and manage expectations
Working with production staff and other engineers to identify, plan, and undertake projects to improve process productivity and safety
Conducting independent research of standards, academic literature, and other reference material to determine project requirements and best practice
Providing sound technical and engineering advice within own scope of knowledge and training in a professional manner
Identifying and pursuing opportunities for self‐development
Eligibility
Qualifications
Senior Engineer
- A Bachelor of Engineering from an Australian institution, or a qualification gained elsewhere that satisfies the requirements of the Washington Accord for recognition as a Professional Engineer.
Senior Technician
- A diploma in a relevant field.
