Description
About us
The Rev. Bill Crews Foundation ('BCF') is one of Sydney's most trusted frontline charities and has supported people experiencing homelessness, poverty and disadvantage for nearly 40 years.
Guided by our mission,
'The person in front of us'
, we provide integrated support across food services, social welfare, healthcare, education and community programs.
Our work is practical, person-centred and focused on dignity, connection and meaningful outcomes for people experiencing hardship.
THE ROLE
We are looking for a Community Engagement Coordinator who is comfortable working directly with people experiencing homelessness, disadvantage, vulnerability, social isolation and complex life circumstances.
This is a hands-on community services role for someone who understands that meaningful engagement can look different for every person.
You may be coordinating a community program one moment then supporting a guest to connect with an appropriate service or responding calmly to an emerging need the next.
You will coordinate community engagement programs, activities and initiatives while building trusted relationships with guests and supporting their connection with BCF services and the broader community.
You will also work collaboratively with our Events team on larger BCF events to support meaningful guest and community participation.
Importantly, this is not a desk-based coordination role.
You will be visible across our services and actively engaged with the people and communities we support.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As our Community Engagement Coordinator, you will:
Coordinate and facilitate community-based programs, activities and engagement initiatives across BCF
Build respectful and professional relationships with people experiencing homelessness, hardship, vulnerability and social isolation
Engage with guests using a person-centred, compassionate and non-judgemental approach
Identify emerging guest needs and facilitate referrals, information sharing and warm introductions to appropriate internal or external services
Facilitate group programs and activities including social connection, wellbeing and creative initiatives
Support outreach and community engagement activities across BCF services
Coordinate Community Engagement programs, activities and smaller-scale events including planning, logistics and stakeholder engagement
Work closely with BCF's Events team to support the planning and delivery of larger organisational and community events with a focus on guest participation and Community Engagement involvement
Develop relationships with community organisations, service providers and local stakeholders
Support the Community Engagement team, volunteers and program participants with day-to-day operational guidance
Recognise and appropriately escalade wellbeing, safety, risk or service delivery concerns
Assist with the appropriate resolution of non-clinical guest feedback and complaints
Maintain accurate program records and monitor participation and outcomes
Contribute to reporting, program evaluation, continuous improvement and grant-related activities.
These responsibilities reflect the coordination, guest engagement, referral, partnership and operational responsibilities of the position.
ABOUT YOU
You may currently be working in community services, homelessness services, welfare, crisis support, outreach, social services or another frontline community-based environment and be looking for an opportunity where you can combine your frontline experience with program coordination and community engagement.
You understand how to engage respectfully with people who may be experiencing complex circumstances.
You can build rapport without judgement and maintain appropriate professional boundaries while recognising when someone requires additional support or referral.
You are calm, practical and solutions-focused.
You are also comfortable working in an environment where priorities can change quickly and no two days necessarily look the same.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
We are looking for someone with:
A tertiary qualification in Social Work, Community Services, Social Science, Welfare or a related discipline
Experience working within community services, welfare, homelessness, crisis support, outreach or a related community-based environment
Demonstrated experience working with people experiencing disadvantage, vulnerability, homelessness, hardship or social isolation
Experience coordinating or supporting community programs, activities or engagement initiatives
Strong engagement skills and the ability to build rapport with people from diverse backgrounds
An understanding of person-centred and trauma-informed approaches to community support
Confidence identifying support needs and connecting people with appropriate services
Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
Sound judgement with the ability to respond calmly and appropriately to challenging or sensitive situations
Strong organisation and time management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities
Solid written and verbal communication skills
Confidence using Microsoft Office programs
A genuine alignment with BCF's mission and values.
The role requires someone who can demonstrate empathy, resilience, adaptability, sound decision-making and the ability to work effectively within a dynamic frontline environment.
WHY JOIN BCF?
This is an opportunity to work somewhere where community engagement is more than organising activities.
It is about connection, dignity and helping people feel part of a community.
At BCF you will work alongside people across community services, welfare, healthcare, food services and other frontline programs with a shared focus on the person in front of us.
We offer:
Not-for-Profit salary packaging benefits of up to $15,900
Access to our Employee Assistance Program ('EAP')
Health and wellbeing benefits through WHEREFIT
A supportive and collaborative team environment
Varied and meaningful frontline community work
The opportunity to contribute directly to programs supporting people experiencing homelessness, hardship and disadvantage.
OUR RECRUITMENT PROCESS
BCF is a unique frontline environment and we want candidates to understand both the opportunity and the realities of the role.
If shortlisted, our recruitment process may include:
A formal interview
A practical component where you may meet members of the team and observe aspects of the working environment.
This process gives us the opportunity to get to know you while also giving you a genuine understanding of BCF, our community and the work you would be stepping into.
Bill Crews Charitable Trust and the Exodus Foundation are separate but closely cooperating entities.
Together, they deliver services and programs under the Rev. Bill Crews Foundation brand name, working to support those in need.
All BCF employees are required to have completed at least three (3) COVID-19 vaccinations including booster doses approved by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration ('TGA').
Proof of vaccination status will be required prior to commencement.
Applicants must have the right to work in Australia.
The successful candidate will also be required to hold or obtain a Working With Children Check, National Police Check and First Aid Certificate as applicable to the position.
Please Note:
This recruitment process is managed directly by the BCF People and Culture ('P&C;') team.
We appreciate the interest of recruitment agencies and external providers however we are not seeking third-party recruitment support for this position.
