Work with real autonomous vehicles, AI and next-generation logistics technology at Brisbane Port.
The project
Pacificas Freight is building a local engineering team to support the Australian rollout of Westwell autonomous vehicle technology at Brisbane Port. We are looking for technically capable recent graduates and early-career engineers, including candidates with up to around two years of relevant experience, who want to work directly with autonomous vehicles in a live industrial environment.
Westwell is an international technology company transforming logistics through the combination of artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, new-energy vehicles and intelligent fleet-management technology. Its technology is being deployed across ports and logistics environments internationally.
You will be employed by Pacificas Freight Pty Ltd as part of the Australian project team supporting Westwell's technology deployment.
You bring the foundations. We provide the training.
You do not need previous experience operating Westwell autonomous vehicles. We are looking for good technical fundamentals, strong learning ability and the confidence to work across both software and physical equipment.
If you bring a working understanding of Python, Linux and engineering or computing fundamentals, Pacificas Freight and Westwell will provide the product and project-specific training required to work with the autonomous vehicle platform. Training and practical exposure will include:
Westwell autonomous vehicle systems and architecture
Fleet Management Systems
Vehicle commissioning and testing
LiDAR, GNSS, cameras and other vehicle sensors
Sensor installation and calibration
System diagnostics and troubleshooting
Structured testing and reporting
Safe operation of autonomous vehicles in a live port environment
Technical issue identification and escalation
Working with Westwell's engineering and product teams
What you'll do
This is a hands-on engineering role combining software, hardware and field operations. Working alongside the local project team and Westwell technical specialists, you will support the commissioning, testing, operation and ongoing performance of autonomous vehicles.
Operate and support systems within Linux environments
Use and modify Python scripts for testing, diagnostics and troubleshooting
Monitor vehicles and equipment through the Fleet Management System
Record, track and elevate technical issues using tools such as Jira
Execute structured test cases and prepare test reports
Record operational issues, vehicle performance and KPI data
Support on-site commissioning and testing of autonomous vehicles
Investigate software, hardware and network-related issues
Work with LiDAR, GNSS, cameras and other vehicle sensors
Assist with sensor installation, adjustment and calibration
Work with onboard computers and networking equipment
Reinstall and configure Linux systems where required
Safely operate vehicles using approved remote-control systems, following training
Work closely with Australian and international engineering teams to diagnose and resolve issues
About you
We are interested in both high-potential graduates and candidates who have already developed some relevant practical experience. Relevant backgrounds include computer science, software engineering, mechatronics, robotics, artificial intelligence, electrical or electronic engineering, automation, mechanical engineering and related technical disciplines.
Ideally, you will have:
A sound foundation in Linux and confidence using the command line
Working knowledge of Python and the ability to understand or modify scripts
An interest in autonomous systems, robotics, AI or industrial automation
Strong practical problem-solving skills
The ability and willingness to work across both software and hardware
Strong learning capability
Good communication skills
A responsible and safety-conscious approach
The ability to work effectively within a technical team
You may be a recent university graduate or have up to around two years of relevant engineering, technology, operations or field experience.
Experience that gives you an advantage
Previous experience in these areas is highly regarded but not essential:
Working within a port, terminal, logistics, transport or industrial workplace
Exposure to autonomous vehicles, robotics or industrial automation
Commissioning or field-service engineering
Automotive, heavy vehicle or mobile equipment environments
Diesel mechanical knowledge or experience
Vehicle electrical or electronic systems
Sensors, networking or onboard computing systems
Troubleshooting machinery or electromechanical equipment
Few early-career candidates will have experience across all of these. We are particularly interested in people who have the technical foundations and the aptitude to learn quickly.
Mandarin and English
Professional working proficiency in both Mandarin Chinese and English is required. The project involves direct technical communication between the Australian project team and Mandarin-speaking Westwell product and engineering teams, so you must be comfortable discussing technical and operational matters in both languages.
The working environment
This is predominantly a site-based position at Brisbane Port, working around autonomous vehicles, equipment and port infrastructure.
The project operates across extended hours, so you must be comfortable working a roster that may include day and night shifts. Safety, disciplined operating procedures and clear communication are critical parts of the role.
Why join the project?
This is an unusual opportunity to build practical experience with autonomous technology operating in the real world. Depending on your existing experience, you will have the opportunity to:
Work directly with autonomous vehicles
Develop practical experience across Python, Linux, sensors and vehicle systems
Learn from Westwell technical and product specialists
Understand how AI and autonomous systems move from technology into real operations
Work across software, hardware and operational engineering
Gain experience within a major port environment
Develop field engineering and troubleshooting capability
Take part in an emerging autonomous logistics capability in Australia
For graduates, this is a chance to turn university knowledge into practical capability. For engineers with some existing experience, it is a route into autonomous systems, AI-enabled logistics and intelligent vehicles.
If you have strong technical foundations, enjoy solving real-world problems and want to work at the intersection of software, AI, vehicles and industrial operations, we would like to hear from you.
Pacificas Freight is an equal opportunity employer. We value distinct perspectives and assess every candidate on their ability, experience and potential to contribute to the mission.
