The **** Parliament of Australia Graduate Program offers high performing and committed graduates the opportunity to develop their qualified skills while expanding their knowledge of the Australian Parliament and contributing to its operations.
The skills and knowledge graduates obtain through the program are designed to contribute to building the foundation for career progression and professional development. We are looking for high performing graduates from a range of disciplines who are highly motivated and have sound research and analytical skills, effective communication skills and good interpersonal skills.
Applicants can apply for a placement with the Department of the House of Representatives, the Department of the Senate, the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) and the Parliamentary Workplace Support Service (PWSS). We welcome applications from graduates from a diverse range of disciplines and backgrounds.
Selection process
Applications are subject to a merit-based selection process. To be considered for a placement, graduates must meet the following minimum eligibility requirements:
be participating in, been accepted into, or have completed a graduate program with an Australian government department or agency within the last five years;
hold, as a minimum, a bachelor's degree from an Australian university or a degree recognised by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition as equivalent;
be an Australian citizen; and
for placements in the PBO and PWSS, hold, or be in the process of obtaining, a baseline security clearance
To apply
Before applying,
discuss your interest with your supervisor or graduatre coordinator. You will be asked to note that they are in agreement with you applying before submitting your application.
Your application should include the following:
a copy of your résumé, including the names and contact details of two work-related referees, one of whom must be your current supervisor
a copy of your academic transcript, and
a one-page statement (approximately 500 words) addressing the following:
work experiences, noteworthy activities, or projects contributed to during your graduate year in relation to the core skills
skills and knowledge gained that demonstrates your suitability for the program, and
how skills and knowledge gained through a placement will benefit your home department or agency, when you return.
Core Skills
When preparing your application, you are asked to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and experience against the following Core skills:
proven high-level analytical, research and evaluation skills
demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
a proven ability to contribute ideas and demonstrate initiative and flexibility
a proven ability to organise, schedule, prioritise and complete assigned tasks
an interest in parliamentary procedure and practice
Applicants for a placement with PBO will also need to demonstrate
proven high-level analytical, research, evaluation, and/or project management skills in the areas of economics, commerce, finance, statistical analysis and/or policy costings
Applicants for a placement with PWSS will also need to demonstrate
demonstrated experience in HR advisory, counselling, communications, or corporate and enabling service roles
an understanding of complex environments and sound judgement around interacting professionally with managers on sensitive matters
