Forensicare is the statutory agency responsible for the provision of adult forensic mental health services across Victoria.
Forensic mental health is a specialist area within the mental health service system. The services provided by Forensicare address the needs of offenders experiencing mental health issues, the mental health sector, the justice sector and the general community.
The primary focus of this work is on providing clinical services for the effective assessment, treatment and management of forensic patients and clients and people with a mental illness who have offended or are at risk of offending. We are committed to providing Recovery-orientated forensic mental health services in which the principles of hope, social inclusion, personalised care and genuine collaboration are fundamental to practice.
These services are delivered through three streams, inpatient services at Thomas Embling Hospital, community services through the Community Forensic Mental Health Service and prison based services at several locations. Forensicare provides a comprehensive research program and specialist training and professional education for our staff and mental health and associated fields.
POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Clinical Coordinator role will triage and coordinate all referrals to specialist mental health at DPFC. This includes; triaging referrals to the 20-bed mental health unit, triage and allocation of psychiatry and nurse practitioner clinics. Maintaining and prioritising waitlists per risk, acuity, distress, and impairment. Clinical oversight of discharges and discharge pathways and other responsibilities as required.
This position requires a high level of mental health knowledge and skill, along with a comprehensive understanding of the correctional environment and systems.
The Clinical Coordinator will have a pivotal role in the establishment and maintenance of a high-quality standard of clinical care,
and ensure practices are in alignment with the National Safety and Quality Health Standards, National Standards for Mental Health Services and Justice Health Quality Framework Standards.The Clinical Coordinator will be required to work closely with other stakeholders within the correctional domain, in particular with the Primary Mental Health Service Provider (Correct Care Australasia) and with Corrections Victoria custodial and clinical staff and the Department of Justice and Regulation.
The Clinical Coordinator will be required to liaise with and participate in meetings with the Forensicare access flow coordinator to discuss transfers between DPFC and Thomas Embling Hospital.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Role model Forensicare’s organisational values and behaviours in all interactions.
- Role model Forensuicare’s principles and philosophy of care provision, using best clinical practice frameworks such as Recovery-oriented care and Trauma Informed Care.
- Role model and promote effective and collaborative working relationships with stakeholders
- Ensure compliance with Forensicare policies and procedures, Commissioners requirements, local operationg procedures and other relevant legislation, standards and ethical codes of practice.
- Contribute to the training and development for Forensicare staff, and stakeholders
- Promote and support a work environment that is free of harassment, bullying and intimidation.
- Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of the Team Business Plan, ensuring
robust links and contribution to the organisation’s Strategic Plan.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
- Hold a Postgraduate Diploma (Nursing Practice Mental Health) or equivalent and possess current registration with AHPRA.
- Thorough understanding and demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery, including the modelling and leading of recovery focused initiatives.
- A sound knowledge of relevant legislation.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, including high level knowledge of clinical practices to build strong connections, cooperation and collaboration.
- Demonstrate experience translating knowledge of current Australian College of Mental Health Nursing standards of practice, contemporary forensic mental health nursing practices and relevant legislation into practice, coupled with significant post registration experience in a similar role.
