About the project

The Austin Hospital Emergency Department (ED) Expansion is a major health infrastructure project in Heidelberg, Victoria, designed to significantly increase critical care capacity for Melbourne's growing north-eastern suburbs.

The project is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) in partnership with Built (the principal builder), Austin Health, and Mercy Health.

About the role

As Project Director, you will lead the delivery of Austin Health's major ED expansion and redevelopment, providing high-level strategic oversight from planning and construction through to commissioning. Reporting to the Chief Information & Services Officer, you will ensure this state-of-the-art emergency facility is delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest clinical standards,



while maintaining secure and uninterrupted patient care throughout a complex live hospital environment.

A regular day will see you:

- Provide strategic leadership for the successful delivery of a major health infrastructure project from construction through to operational launch
- Direct project governance, financial performance and capital expenditure, ensuring compliance with funding agreements and organisational priorities.
- Lead high-value procurement, contract and vendor management activities to support the delivery of critical project outcomes.
- Ensure safe, compliant and uninterrupted healthcare operations throughout all stages of construction and commissioning.
- Oversee clinical commissioning, digital health integration and operational readiness to support a successful transition to service delivery.
- Act as the key liaison between Austin Health executives, government agencies, project partners and clinical stakeholders, driving collaboration and informed decision-making.

About you

To be successful in this role you'll bring with you:

- Degree-qualified in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Healthcare Administration, or related discipline, with Postgraduate Qualifications (e.g. Master of Project Management, MBA, or Certified Health Executive) highly desirable.
- Extensive senior leadership experience directing large-scale, complex construction programs, with a proven track record specifically within health infrastructure or major public hospitals.
- Proven success leading complex brown-field redevelopments in live healthcare settings while maintaining critical clinical operations.
- Deep understanding of healthcare-specific procurement, clinical workflow design, medical gas/equipment placement, and infection control standards during active builds.
- Exceptional ability to influence and provide strategic advice to Executive, Board, government, and key stakeholder groups.
- Outstanding stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills,



with the ability to build consensus across diverse clinical, operational, and external partners.
