About the organisation
The Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) is dedicated to working together to deliver excellent care now, for a healthier community tomorrow. Serving a vibrant population of over 310,000 residents across a stunning regional footprint, this healthcare network thrives on a culture that puts people first. Guided by the NSW Health CORE values of Collaboration, Openness, Respect, and Empowerment, the district ensures their multidisciplinary teams feel supported, protected, and motivated to innovate every day.
About the role
The Director, Aboriginal Health, Oral Health and Health Promotion is a senior leadership role that shapes how Northern NSW Local Health District delivers culturally safe, high quality and community centred care. Working directly with the Chief Executive as part of the Executive Leadership Team, the role provides strategic direction, cultural advice and operational leadership across three major service areas. It brings an Aboriginal voice and perspective to district wide strategy, service design and decision making, ensuring that programs and policies reflect the priorities of Aboriginal communities and improve health outcomes across the region.
This role leads a diverse workforce across Aboriginal Health, Oral Health and Health Promotion.
These teams were recently brought together and are still forming a shared identity, so a key focus is building cohesion, clarity and a strong culture of accountability and cultural safety. The Director oversees business planning, performance, governance, reporting, workforce development and financial management, and ensures services meet national, state and local indicators. A central part of the role is strengthening partnerships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, community leaders, government agencies and internal stakeholders. The Director guides respectful engagement, supports cultural capability across the district, and champions initiatives that grow Aboriginal leadership and career pathways.
About you
You are an experienced Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander leader who brings cultural credibility, strategic insight and the ability to work confidently across complex systems. Your leadership style is grounded in integrity, collaboration and respect, and you’re skilled at navigating sensitive community dynamics with maturity and clarity.
You have substantial management experience (whether gained in health, government, community-controlled organisations or another complex public sector environment) and you’re comfortable leading multidisciplinary teams through change. You communicate with influence, build trust quickly, and work effectively with senior executives, clinicians, ACCHOs, Elders and community leaders. You think strategically, deliver results,
and foster high performance and “grow your own talent” pathways.
Above all, you’re committed to ensuring Aboriginal Health, Oral Health and Health Promotion are embedded as everybody’s business across the District.
