An established and highly regarded organisation within the Australian residential construction and development sector is seeking an experienced Head of Preconstruction to lead and optimise its preconstruction operations.
This is a genuine senior leadership opportunity for an individual who can bring together people, process, design, approvals, customer experience and operational performance to create a high-performing preconstruction function.
The organisation has a strong presence within the Australian market and is entering an exciting period of continued growth and operational improvement.
The Opportunity
Reporting into senior leadership, you will take ownership of the end-to-end preconstruction function, leading multiple teams and ensuring projects move efficiently from initial design through to construction readiness.
You will be responsible for bringing greater structure, accountability and visibility across the function, while developing the people, systems and processes required to support ongoing business growth.
Your remit will span areas including:
Drafting and design coordination
Planning and approvals / permits
Client selections
Customer care
Preconstruction project planning
Operational reporting and performance management
Process improvement and standardisation
Risk, compliance and quality
Cross-functional stakeholder management
You will work closely with senior stakeholders across Sales, Construction, Operations and Development , ensuring the preconstruction function is aligned with broader organisational objectives.
What You'll Be Doing
Lead, mentor and develop multidisciplinary preconstruction teams.
Establish explicit KPIs, reporting structures and performance measures across the function.
Oversee design, drafting and approval processes to ensure projects progress efficiently and accurately.
Improve workflows,
systems and processes to reduce delays, rework and operational bottlenecks.
Monitor project pipelines, resource requirements, deadlines and operational risks.
Partner with senior leadership to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Develop and implement strategies that improve customer experience throughout the preconstruction journey.
Ensure projects and processes remain compliant with relevant building, planning and regulatory requirements.
Provide senior management with explicit reporting, analysis and recommendations.
Build strong relationships across internal departments and external stakeholders.
Develop team capability through coaching, mentoring, training and succession planning.
Act as a trusted operational adviser and change leader within the organisation.
About You
We are looking for an established construction or development professional who has operated at a senior management level and understands the complexities of taking projects from concept and customer engagement through to construction readiness.
Your background could come from a range of environments, including:
Residential construction
Developer-builder organisations
Volume or project home building
Design and preconstruction
Development management
Construction operations
Building approvals / planning
You may currently be operating as a Head of Preconstruction, Preconstruction Manager, Construction Manager, Development Manager, Operations Manager, Design Manager,
Senior Project Manager or similar , and be ready to take the next step into a broader leadership position.
Most importantly, you will have demonstrated experience leading teams, managing competing priorities, improving operational performance and influencing senior stakeholders.
Significant experience within construction, development or a closely related environment.
Proven senior management or leadership experience.
Strong understanding of preconstruction processes and project lifecycles.
Experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
Strong commercial and operational understanding.
Demonstrated ability to develop and implement processes, systems and KPIs.
Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
The ability to make evidence-based decisions in a fast-paced environment.
A genuine leadership mindset with the ability to develop and motivate people.
A proactive, commercially minded and solutions-focused approach.
Relevant tertiary qualifications are advantageous but not essential .
