Positive Practice Framework – Positive Behaviour Support
Positive Behaviour Support is both a philosophy of practice and term to describe a range of individual and multi-systemic interventions designed to effect change in people’s behaviour and ultimately improve their quality of life. Positive Behaviour Support is the approach that underpins a Positive Practice Framework and is employed by all Specialist Behaviour Consultants as part of their practice model.
Positive behaviour support recognises that all behaviour has a purpose or function, including those considered to be of concern. In order to create adaptive change, it is important to understand the context in which any behaviours of concern occur, including environments in which these behaviours present and internally based antecedents.
Positive Behaviour Support rests on a Functional Behaviour Assessment that focuses on positive methods of creating behaviour change and improved quality of life. It commences with person-centred planning, leads to an individualised service based on effective and ethical practice and produces outcomes that address the person’s wants and needs.
Positive behaviour support is implemented in a partnership approach with the person, person’s support network and staff who work collaboratively to
- Identify behaviours of concern and goals to reduce these behaviours
- Gather relevant current and historical information to identify the factors surrounding the behaviours of concern
- Develop an individualised Behaviour Support Plan
- Generate, implement and evaluate strategies outlined in the Behaviour Support Plan.
Positive behaviour support utilises systemic, environmental, educational and other therapeutic strategies to prevent the occurrence of behaviours of concern by:
- Engaging systems changes to redesign a person’s living environment (opportunities to make more choices, modifying the home/setting or school curriculum)
- Teaching, strengthening and expanding a person’s coping strategies and individual skill set to reduce likelihood of behaviours of concern (such as communication and self-management skills)
The goal of the Specialist Behaviour Consultant is to maximise and improve the quality of life of the person they are supporting and to minimise the presenting behaviours of concern. Strategies used to achieve these goals rest primarily on proactive strategies implemented prior to the display of concerning behaviours and reduce the likelihood of the person resorting to these behaviours in order to have their needs met. Reactive strategies, those implemented after displays of behaviours of concern remain crucial to the overall behaviour support plan, but make up a much smaller portion of the program. At all times, strategies rely on the least restrictive method of behaviour intervention and focus more on developing functionally equivalent coping skills and environmental changes to met the needs of the person.
