The cultural and geographic diversity, size and complexity of the Northern Territory create both challenges and opportunities in delivering fit-for-purpose government policy, regulation and services. Around 30% of the Territory’s population are Aboriginal people, and many live in regional and remote locations where English may be a second or third language and economic and labour market opportunities can be limited. The Territory’s distinctive cultural, social, environmental and economic context requires robust partnerships, place-based leadership and sound long-term stewardship of its resources and energy systems.
The Department of Mining and Energy is responsible for implementing the Territory Government’s priorities for mineral and energy resources development, facilitating exploration, supporting expansion of energy supply for the Territory, Australia and strategic partners, and providing government oversight of energy policy, renewables and energy systems. With an annual budget of approximately $39 million and a workforce of around 165 employees, the department plays a key role in supporting responsible resource development, energy security and economic growth across the Territory.
