Are you an experienced Ecologist ready to take the next step into a broader senior role?
CO2 Australia is looking for a Senior Ecologist to join our Ecology team and play a key role in delivering biodiversity, environmental offsets, and natural capital projects across Queensland and elsewhere in Australia.
This is an opportunity to combine technical ecology with people leadership, project management, client relationships, and business development – while still getting out in the field.
You’ll lead projects and field programs, manage and develop two Ecologists, work directly with clients, and help identify and secure new opportunities. You’ll be a senior day-to-day technical resource within the team, working closely with our Head of Ecology, who retains final technical review and sign-off responsibility.
And importantly, you’ll still get out into the field.
What you’ll be doing:
This is a varied role where you’ll have the opportunity to:
Lead ecological field programs including Regional Ecosystem ground-truthing, BioCondition assessments, threatened species surveys and flora and fauna surveys.
Manage projects from planning through to completion, taking ownership of scope, budgets, programs, resourcing, risk, and client deliverables.
Lead and develop two Ecologists, providing day-to-day guidance, coaching, feedback, and support.
Build robust client relationships, acting as a trusted point of contact and managing expectations throughout project delivery.
Contribute to business development, including scoping opportunities, preparing proposals and tenders, developing fee estimates, and helping secure new and repeat work.
Prepare and review high-quality technical reports and deliverables, working with the Head of Ecology on matters requiring final technical review and sign-off.
The role remains hands-on,
with fieldwork typically representing 20 - 25% of working days across the year. This includes regional and interstate travel and occasional extended field trips of up to 10 - 12 days.
What we’re looking for
You’ll bring:
A degree in Ecology, Zoology, Botany, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
At least five years’ ecological survey and assessment experience, ideally gained across Queensland.
Strong experience in Regional Ecosystem verification, floristic surveys, vegetation community mapping, plant identification, and BioCondition assessments.
Experience leading ecological surveys and providing guidance and support to less experienced Ecologists.
Demonstrated project management capability, including managing scope, budgets, programs, resources, and client deliverables.
Strong client and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to build trusted professional relationships.
An interest in the commercial side of consulting and a willingness to contribute to proposals, business development and generating new and repeat work.
A current unrestricted driver’s licence and willingness to undertake fieldwork in remote and rugged environments.
Experience in environmental impact assessment, fauna identification and ecology, GIS, or NSW ecology (particularly BAM experience or accreditation) would also be highly regarded.
Why CO2 Australia?
This isn’t a role where you’ll spend all your time behind a desk or all your time in the field.
It offers the opportunity to lead people, own projects, work directly with clients and continue building your technical expertise across some genuinely interesting biodiversity, carbon, and natural capital projects.
You’ll join an established Australian environmental business where your experience can influence not just project outcomes, but the development of the people around you and the continued growth of our Ecology capability.
