Company Description Dimly is a group friend-matching app designed for University of Sydney students, helping them connect through small, compatibility-based groups instead of traditional profile swiping. Students complete a short quiz and are matched into groups of 4–6 people, with initial conversations taking place in pseudonymous group chats to reduce social pressure.
Once groups are ready to meet, the app suggests on-campus venues and supports a smooth transition from online chat to in-person connection. Dimly has organically matched over 120 USyd students into dozens of friend groups without paid marketing or ads. The product is built by a solo student founder and is now evolving into a small team focused on improving the app, refining the matching process, and expanding campus outreach.
What you'd do
- Build and run Dimly's presence on the platforms students actually use
- Use your existing access, a society, residence, course cohort, or community, to introduce Dimly where it's genuinely practical
- Set up and run private cohorts for that community, students who want to socialise more but haven't found an easy way to
- Own outreach for your slice of campus and decide how to approach it
- Bring back what students actually say about the product
Who it suits Someone embedded in a real community on campus, a society, a course cohort, a residence, who has actual standing there, not just membership. You should be someone people in that community would take seriously if you brought something to them.
This is unpaid and early-stage. In exchange, you get real ownership: you decide how to approach your community, you see the direct results, and you walk away with something specific you built, not a generic "helped with marketing."
No marketing background needed. What matters more: Can you get people in your network to actually listen to you.
