Structures by Design (Australia) Pty Ltd is a Melbourne-based company that designs, builds and installs outdoor shade and roofing structures. We trade as SBD Shades (shade sails, canopies and shade structures) and LouvreLux (operable louvre roofs, retractable roofs and pergola systems). Our clients include schools, councils, builders, and hotels and hospitality venues across Melbourne, regional Victoria and NSW.

Recent projects include a louvre roof system at Chipping Norton Hotel NSW, custom retractable roof structure at the Good Nature Hotel in Federation Square, and shade canopies for primary schools across Melbourne.

We are looking for a Carpenter to join our construction and installation team on a full-time, permanent basis.

The role

You will construct, erect and install outdoor structures, pergolas, canopies and roofing systems. You will work from plans and specifications on commercial and residential sites. The role covers the full carpentry scope on each job, from reading drawings and setting out through to framing, fixing and finishing. You will work with timber, steel and aluminium components.

Key duties

- Studying plans, drawings and specifications to determine materials required, dimensions and installation procedures
- Measuring, marking out and setting out structures on site, including post positions, levels and footings
- Selecting and preparing timber and other materials for each job
- Measuring, cutting, shaping, assembling and joining timber and other materials using hand and power tools
- Constructing and erecting timber frameworks, including pergola frames, beams, rafters, bearers and joists
- Constructing formwork for concrete footings and pads
- Building and installing structural members, battens, fascias, trims and cladding
- Fitting roofing and panel systems, including louvre blades, polycarbonate and insulated roof panels, flashings and gutters
- Connecting new structures to existing buildings, including ledgers, fixings to existing framing and weatherproofing tie-ins
- Installing fixtures such as screens,



privacy panels, doors and fittings on outdoor structures
- Erecting and dismantling scaffolding and working platforms as required
- Checking the accuracy of work with levels, squares, string lines and laser levels to ensure structures are plumb, level and to specification
- Repairing, renovating and modifying existing structures
- Following safe work practices, including working at heights, and keeping a clean, compliant site

Skills and experience required

Essential

- At least 3 years' experience working as a carpenter, including timber framing, setting out and structural carpentry
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, shop and engineering drawings
- Experience working with a range of materials, including timber, steel and aluminium
- Construction Induction Card (White Card)
- Current Australian driver's licence and access to own vehicle
- Ability to work at heights and perform physical outdoor work
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team while coordinating effectively with other trades

Desirable

- Trade qualification in carpentry (Certificate III in Carpentry or equivalent)
- Experience building pergolas, decks, carports, verandahs or outdoor roofing structures
- Experience installing louvre roofs, retractable roofs or shade structures
- EWP (Yellow Card) or Working at Heights certification
- Experience on commercial construction sites
