About Us The Gastrointestinal (GGI) ward is a 28-bed ward (physical and funded) located in C2East (C2E) at the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH). GGI is a mixed surgical/ medical ward caring for patients with Gastrointestinal (GI) and Gastroenterology (GE) conditions.
Care of the patients can be pre or post-operative or non-surgical. The prime function of the ward is to provide high-quality nursing care (Registered, Enrolled and Assistant nurses) to both short and long stay patients.
During periods of capacity within the Hospital and Health Service (HHS), the escalation process for bed demand allows the ward to open the 'capacity bay' to physically take the bed platform to 29 patients, during business hours Monday to Friday only. This patient is allocated to the indirect staff on the floor, so that the ward can accept a patient from the Emergency Department (ED) and contribute to patient flow into and out of the ED.
