We serve dine-in, takeaway and online delivery customers with a broad Chinese menu covering dumplings, chicken, beef, pork, seafood and vegetable dishes, fried rice, noodles, soups and snacks, all cooked fresh to order in our kitchen.
We reach our customers through our restaurant, our website and the major online ordering platforms, and our kitchen handles a steady volume of orders across lunch and dinner service, seven days a week. We are currently seeking an experienced Cook to join our kitchen team in Newton.
About the role:
This is a full-time, on-site position based in our Newton kitchen, suited to a qualified and reliable cook with experience in a busy commercial kitchen. You will prepare, season and cook the dishes on our Chinese menu to established recipes and standards, across wok, deep-frying, steaming and dumpling preparation stations. The role involves working closely with the other kitchen staff and the front of house team to ensure that every order is prepared consistently, served on time and handled in line with food safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Examine meat, seafood, vegetables and other ingredients on delivery and before use to ensure freshness, quality and suitability for cooking.
- Prepare ingredients for service, including washing, cutting, portioning, marinating and seasoning meat, seafood and vegetables.
- Prepare and cook dishes on the restaurant's Chinese menu, including stir-fried, deep-fried, steamed and braised dishes, fried rice and noodles, in accordance with established recipes.
- Prepare dumplings, sauces, stocks and soups used across the menu.
- Regulate the temperatures of woks, burners, deep fryers, steamers, ovens and other commercial cooking equipment.
- Season food during cooking and taste dishes to maintain consistent flavour and quality.
- Portion food, place it on plates or in takeaway packaging, and add sauces, gravies and garnishes.
- Prepare food to meet customers' special dietary requirements and requests, including allergen-related requests.
- Store food in temperature-controlled facilities, and label, date and rotate stock in accordance with food safety requirements.
- Monitor stock levels of ingredients and kitchen supplies, and advise management of ordering requirements.
- Control portion sizes and minimise food wastage.
- Clean and maintain cooking equipment, utensils and food preparation areas, and follow food safety, hygiene and workplace health and safety procedures at all times.
- Assist with planning menu items and specials and estimating food requirements.
- Assist in training and guiding kitchen hands and junior kitchen staff.
Qualification Requirements:
- At least 1 year of experience as a Cook in a commercial kitchen.
- Experience in Chinese or other Asian cuisine, including wok cooking, will be highly regarded.
- Sound knowledge of food safety, hygiene and secure food handling practices.
- Ability to work efficiently and consistently under pressure during busy service periods.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a small kitchen team.
- Availability to work a rotating roster, including evenings, weekends and public holidays.
Pay: $85,000.00 per year
