Our client is a newly established, philanthropically funded Australian organisation working on public attitudes to energy. Most of the people it needs to reach have never seen anything the sector has made. They watch what they choose to watch, and this role makes the work they'll choose.
We want the most creative person we can find. Quirky, irreverent, bold, with out-of-the-box ideas and a record of turning them into campaigns people chose to watch. Run-of-the-mill social marketing and AI slop don't count. If your best work made someone laugh, argue, or send it to their mum, we want to see it.
Most Australians now form their views on energy from what they watch and share with each other. Our client was set up to take part in that every day, working with creators and production partners to make content people choose to watch about power bills, jobs and the shift to clean energy. The organisation is betting that steady, trustworthy content in the places people already spend their time will change how they think about energy. The Creative Director makes that content worth watching.
The Creative Director sets creative direction across everything the organisation publishes or commissions. You turn a fixed message architecture into briefs external creators can run with after one read, and you work through a network of creators and production houses.
What you will own
- Creative direction across everything the organisation publishes. Most of the work is made by external creators and production houses; you'll pick up the tools yourself when a moment needs it rapid.
- Briefing packs, rates and format specifications for creators and production houses.
- The kill-or-iterate call on every commission, against criteria set independently before launch.
- Rapid-response turnaround when the news cycle moves.
- Platform adaptation: which platform carries which argument, and what changed there this month.
- A standing watch on the platforms: formats, distribution, moderation and where audiences are moving, so a change to one of them is something we planned for.
- Format performance data, fed back into a shared benchmark library.
- Getting more work out of the budget with AI-assisted production, wherever it holds up.
What you bring
- Creative, quirky, irreverent, bold ideas, and a proven ability to execute them. Show us campaigns that broke through.
- A portfolio that shows you make work at scale for audiences who weren't looking for you.
- You work in both registers. You can hold the strategy in your head while you shape the work, and explain why a piece of work serves the argument as readily as why it's good.
- Brief-writing craft. Your briefs go straight to external creators.
- Experience in one or more of:
in-house at a startup that had to break through on a small budget; commercial branded content reaching outer-suburban, multicultural or regional audiences; or the creator economy, having built an audience yourself.
- Real curiosity about people whose lives look nothing like yours, and the work to show it.
- You know the culture where your audience spends its time: this week's formats, references and running jokes. You can tell a moment worth jumping on from one that's already over, and get something out while it still counts.
- Fluency in the major platforms, and the willingness to learn the ones you'd never use yourself. The idea comes first; the platform decides the cut.
- You get real work out of AI tools for the grind: more versions, faster drafts, cheaper testing. The ideas stay yours.
- Campaign pace. When the news moves, you can get a brief out and work back within hours.
- You can cut a creator's favourite 20 seconds and still be the first person they pitch next time.
How they work
- Five weeks' annual leave, plus a paid closedown between Christmas and New Year.
- You set your own hours around a few fixed team times each week, with rapid-response windows when the news cycle demands it.
- The work is about energy policy, and some of it is politically sensitive. Every piece is fact-checked, and you'll work within clear legal and disclosure rules.
How they assess Portfolio-led, with a performance-based interview built around your own work and one live problem they're facing.
