CSSD (Central Sterilising Service Department) Technician is responsible for the sterilisation and reprocessing of medical/surgical instruments and other reusable medical devices (RMDS). Sterilising technicians are to provide a timely and effective service to internal and external customers in accordance with central sterilising service department (CSSD) policies and procedures and recognized standards (AS 5369 2023).
Key responsibilities
- Monitor and maintain the integrity of sterilised RMDs and equipment, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards
- Understand infection control principles and best practices in sterilisation
- Work closely with other departments within the hospital to ensure timely availability of sterile RMDs for surgery and other procedures
- Work on own initiative, prioritize and manage multiple issues simultaneously and demonstrate attention to detail
- Identify and sort surgical instruments correctly
- Inspect instruments for damage, cleanliness and function before sterilisation
- Wrap and package instruments using appropriate materials (pouches, wrap, tray)
- Operate autoclave, ultrasonic cleaners, washer disinfector and sterilisation tray
- Use chemical indicators (CIs) and biological indicators (BIs)
- Maintain effective record keeping and compliance with hospital policies and work health and safety
About you
- Certificate III Sterilisation Services
- Experience in the CSSD environment
- Good time management and organizational skills, able to balance priorities
- Effective communication skills with colleagues and patients
- Understanding of person-centred care, evidence-based practice and quality improvement
- Competent computer literacy
- Ability to work independently and as part of the team
- Understanding of sterilisation processes and infection control prevention
- Experience with medical equipment and instruments processes
- Protected handling of contaminated instruments and hazardous material
