About the Role
You’ll join the team delivering the Bus Solution package of the Opal Next Generation (ONG) program—an exciting, high-impact initiative that will reshape how passengers plan journeys, pay for travel, and access real-time information across the NSW Opal-enabled bus network. As Deployment Manager, you’ll play a key role in the successful delivery and ongoing operation of the TfNSW Opal Next Generation (ONG) project. You will lead the planning and end-to-end execution of the physical deployment of the ONG Bus Solution, including the installation, testing and commissioning of On-Vehicle Devices (OVDs) and Bus Validators across the NSW bus fleet.
You will own the deployment plan, mobilise and manage installation partners, coordinate deployment readiness, and drive each region through deployment and acceptance operational readiness gates. You will also work closely with the Service Delivery Manager to support transition into service.
How you’ll make an impact:
Deployment planning
- Own, maintain and execute the Deployment Management Plan, including the Operator-specific lower-level deployment plans required under the Contract.
- Incorporate Bus Survey findings, installation design, OVD/Bus Validator installation methods by bus make and model, and regional installation schedules.
- Align deployment sequencing with the Technical Transition Plan and Training Management Plan.
Installation & commissioning
- Establish, resource and manage the third-party installation teams delivering at depots across each Bus Operating Region
- Direct pre-installation preparation, installation and post-installation commissioning tests; ensure installation and commissioning evidence, test records and acceptance documentation are completed.
- Manage installation quality assurance, record keeping, asset registration with our third party and ensure depots and vehicles are restored to the agreed condition following installation activity; oversee decommissioning and disposal of legacy devices in line with agreed procedures.
- Lead daily deployment control across active depots, including confirmation of vehicle lists, resource allocation, progress tracking, exception management and handover of operationally ready vehicles.
- Coordinate deployment planning ensuring material availability, bus delivery and installation capacity are aligned.
- Coordinate any discrepancy from agreed deployment plans, including supplier, operator or customer-driven impacts, the plan,
recording details to enable contractual, commercial and schedule management of the impact of any discrepancy.
Commercial and supplier management
- Hold third-party installation partners accountable for delivery against agreed scope, schedule, milestones, productivity expectations and quality standards across each deployment region.
- Monitor contractor performance, resource utilisation and installation crew productivity, using evidence-led reporting to identify delays, constraints or underperformance early.
- Identify, escalate and support the management of deployment-related variations, delays or commercial impacts that may affect cost, schedule, scope or contractual outcomes.
- Work with the Program Director, PMO and commercial stakeholders to ensure supplier delivery issues are visible, actioned and aligned with program governance and contractual obligations.
Transition, cutover & hypercare
- Execute transition for each region, including managing stakeholder engagement, change management, transition risk.
- Support technical workstreams with applicable release management and roll-back plans, and legacy ETS/PTIPS cutover coordination.
- Support the Service Delivery and Operations teams during the initial post-deployment stabilisation period by coordinating deployment-related defect rectification, capturing lessons learned and ensuring all deployment acceptance criteria are met prior to operational handover.
Stakeholder, WHS & reporting
- Secure depot access and installation windows from Operators, and minimise disruption to operations and customers
- Ensure all deployment and installation activities comply with WHS requirements, approved methods of work, depot access conditions and program safety controls, with incidents and hazards promptly escalated and addressed.
- Provide regular, evidence-led installation progress reporting; feed schedule updates and maintain an accurate RAID register with support from PMO.
About You
What you’ll bring to the role:
- Demonstrated experience leading large-scale,
multi-site field deployment or roll-out of on-vehicle, fleet, or Transportation hardware
- Proven management of installation crews and subcontracted personnel, including scheduling, quality assurance and daily progress control across concurrent sites.
- Demonstrated ability to manage third-party supplier performance against agreed scope, milestones, productivity expectations and commercial obligations in a complex field deployment environment.
- Public transport, transit-technology or regulated-fleet domain experience; familiarity with depot operations and bus availability constraints.
- Strong WHS competency for installation in live operational environments, with the ability to complete site-access and induction requirements.
- Track record of managing cutover with minimal service disruption.
- Stakeholder management across client, operators and internal delivery workstreams; transparent, evidence-led progress reporting.
- Milestone and gate-aware delivery discipline; comfortable operating to defined acceptance/exit criteria.
- Willingness to travel regularly to depots and customer sites across the Greater Sydney Region.
In addition, it would be great if you had:
- Experience on NSW Government / TfNSW technology programs or comparable public-sector delivery.
- Familiarity with PRINCE2 delivery governance and structured schedule tools (MS Project; Wrike).
- Prior exposure to hypercare and warranty/defect-management transition into O&M.;
- Understanding of asset registration, SAM/SIM provisioning and device commissioning workflows.
