Job Summary
Join a growing Sydney commercial construction company in a newly created Design Documenter position, taking ownership of documentation for a major national rollout of sport and leisure facilities. You'll turn concept designs into complete, buildable Australian documentation packages and work closely with the construction team from tender through to delivery.
About the Business
Our client is a growing Sydney-based commercial construction company with a strong pipeline of projects and a close-knit, collaborative team. The business delivers commercial fit-out and refurbishment projects across multiple sectors and has recently secured a significant multi-site national rollout within the sport and leisure sector.
With numerous facilities planned across Australia over the coming years, they're now looking to bring dedicated design and documentation capability into the construction team.
This will be the business's first dedicated Design Documenter appointment, giving the successful person genuine ownership and the opportunity to establish how the function operates moving forward.
The Opportunity
You'll take initial concept information prepared by external architects and develop it into complete tender and for-construction documentation packages suitable for the Australian construction environment. This is more than a drafting position.
You'll be expected to critically review designs, identify issues, challenge information where necessary and work closely with consultants, subcontractors and the internal delivery team to ensure drawings are practical, coordinated and buildable.
As the projects form part of a national rollout, you'll also play an key role in creating consistent and repeatable documentation standards, capturing lessons from each completed facility and improving the next package.
When project requirements allow, you'll also provide design and documentation support across other projects within the business.

- Produce complete for-construction documentation
- Prepare and review as-built architectural documentation

- Capture lessons learnt and incorporate improvements into future rollout projects
- Support wider design requirements across the business where required
About You
We're looking for someone with strong technical documentation skills who also understands how projects are actually priced and built.
You'll ideally have
- Proven experience producing detailed construction documentation from tender through to construction
- Strong commercial fit-out, construction or architectural documentation experience
- High proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit and DWG-based workflows
- Strong design capability rather than purely drafting experience
- Practical understanding of construction methodology and buildability
- Confidence reviewing and challenging information produced by external architects
- Strong coordination and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Clear communication and ability to work closely with project, site and commercial teams
- Proactive, solutions-focused approach with a high level of ownership
Experience across sport, recreation or leisure facilities, D&C; projects, commercial fit-outs, change-of-use projects or multi-site rollout programmes would be particularly relevant.
What's in it for you?
- Newly created position with genuine ownership
- Major national rollout with a strong forward pipeline
- Opportunity to establish and improve documentation standards across multiple projects
- Work across projects from design and tender through to construction and handover
- Regular interaction with the people actually delivering the projects
- Broad exposure across design, construction and commercial functions
- Join a growing, close-knit Sydney construction team
- Opportunity to support other commercial projects across the wider business
- Long-term opportunity as the company's internal design capability develops
The position is full time and Sydney-based, with regular site attendance required. There will also be occasional interstate travel for inspections and project requirements. The business is looking to appoint as soon as possible.
If you're an experienced Design Documenter who enjoys the practical side of construction and wants greater ownership than a traditional drafting role, we'd be keen to hear from you.
