Location: Canberra, ACT preferred (Brisbane or Melbourne considered)
Contract: 1 November 2026 to 31 August 2027, with an extension option of up to 6 months
Pay: $72.80 - $95.20 p/h including super (negotiable)
Work type: Full-time, 38 hours per week
Work arrangement: Hybrid, with specific arrangements agreed with your supervisor on a case-by-case basis
About the Role
Join our Federal Government client in a hands-on finance role focused on Commonwealth external budgets and capital. You will manage key parts of the budget cycle, maintain external budgets in CBMS and prepare government budget and reporting material. You will also provide practical financial advice to business areas and improve the tools and processes that support external budgeting.
What You'll Be Doing
- Develop Current Policy Proposal costings and detailed costing justifications
- Lead external budget and capital budget processes
- Maintain external budgets and Actuals reporting in CBMS
- Prepare Portfolio Budget Statements and Portfolio Additional Estimates Statements
- Support internal capital budgeting and Capital Management Plan preparation
- Coordinate government reporting and responses to Estimates Memoranda
- Prepare strategic and technical advice on Commonwealth budget matters
- Work with internal and external stakeholders as a trusted finance partner
- Improve external-budget tools, systems, procedures and processes
- Support knowledge transfer and training across the finance team
What You Bring (Essential Criteria)
- You've worked hands-on with external budgeting and understand the Australian Government financial framework
- You've developed and communicated financial management advice
- You can resolve complex accounting and budgeting issues accurately and on time
- You've built productive relationships with finance and non-finance stakeholders
- You're proficient with Microsoft Office and systems such as CBMS
- You hold a relevant accounting, commerce or business degree with CA/CPA study, or equivalent relevant work experience
- You're an Australian citizen
- You must hold a current Baseline clearance or above
Nice to Have (Desirable Criteria)
- Direct experience delivering Commonwealth external budgets in a central finance function
- Hands-on experience with NPP costings, PBS, PAES, Estimates reporting or capital budgeting
- Strong CBMS experience across budget maintenance and reporting
