Primary objective

Provide a specialist general surgical service to include the care of both inpatient and ambulatory patients, within the Royal Darwin Hospital,

regional hospitals and remote communities; contribute to post graduate education at Royal Darwin Hospital, including the supervision of surgical trainees.

Key duties and responsibilities





- As a General Surgical Consultant provide care and advice on the management of patients with general surgical conditions to colleagues both within and outside the specialty, and to those colleagues in geographically isolated centres in the Northern Territory.
- Provide, with other members of the Department of Surgery, routine and emergency after hours care on a roster basis.
- Provide an after-hours consultancy service to colleagues and junior medical staff.
- Direct, coordinate, supervise, manage and evaluate the work of subordinate medical staff in the provision of patient care.
- Liaise with other medical, paramedical and nursing staff and provide input into Unit and Hospital policies, for the ongoing development of specialist surgical services in the Northern Territory.
- Participate in continuous medical education including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, professional development, peer review, research, teaching, quality improvement activities and clinical audits as appropriate.
- With other members of the surgical unit, participate, supervise Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities, review, and revise policies, procedures and guidelines in line with national and international recommendations.
- Conduct regular inpatient ward rounds and outpatient sessions, incorporating teaching,



and provide specialist opinion to referring medical practitioners.
- Participate in other activities as directed by the Director of Surgical Services.
- Assist outreach services to Katherine and Gove hospitals.
- Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria

Essential

- Eligible for general or specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or equivalent.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work workplace, as a team member.
- An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health.
- Evidence of commitment to; continuing education, teaching, research and quality assurance activities.
- Proven ability to manage self and others, monitor performance, manage change and develop policy with an understanding of EEO and OH&S; principals and policy.
- An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures.
- Passion for rural, regional and Aboriginal healthcare.
- An enthusiasm to develop cultural competency.

Desirable

- Ability to cover demands across the NT, including Alice Springs on regular visits.
