About The Role
Coogee is seeking a motivated and hands-on Heavy Diesel Mechanic Apprentice to join our Transport team in Kwinana.
Working alongside experienced tradespeople, you'll gain practical experience maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of prime movers, tankers and transport equipment while developing valuable mechanical skills in a busy workshop environment. Reporting to the Transport Workshop Supervisor, this is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for the heavy vehicle and automotive industry, who enjoys hands-on mechanical work and is committed to developing their skills and career in diesel mechanics
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the inspection, servicing, maintenance, and repair of heavy diesel equipment, including prime movers, trailers, tankers, earthmoving equipment, forklifts, generators, pumps, and other mobile plant, under the guidance of qualified tradespeople.
- Develop practical skills in diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and engine-related faults, using appropriate testing equipment, diagnostic tools, manuals, and workplace procedures.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance activities including lubrication, filter changes, fluid checks, component inspections, and replacement of worn or damaged parts to support equipment reliability and safe operation.
- Carry out maintenance activities in accordance with Major Hazard Facility (MHF) requirements, including compliance with permit-to-work systems, isolations, Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), risk assessments,
and site safety procedures.
- Safely use and maintain workshop tools, equipment, and lifting devices, ensuring all work is completed to manufacturer specifications, company standards, and legislative requirements.
- Interpret technical manuals, service information, work instructions, and maintenance schedules to support maintenance and repair activities while developing trade knowledge and competency.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and job documentation, contributing to asset history, compliance requirements, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, housekeeping, and environmental compliance, proactively identifying hazards, reporting incidents, and contributing to a positive safety culture across the transport and maintenance teams.
- Support breakdown response and equipment recovery activities under supervision, assisting in restoring equipment to service safely and efficiently while minimising operational downtime.
- Actively participate in apprenticeship training, trade development, and competency programs, applying classroom learning in the workplace and continually developing technical and professional skills.
The Successful Candidate Will Have
- Strong commitment to safety and safe work practices, with a willingness to learn and apply hazard identification, risk assessment, isolation procedures, and permit-to-work requirements within a Major Hazard Facility (MHF) environment.
- A genuine interest in the heavy automotive and diesel mechanical industry, with a passion for working on prime movers, trailers, tankers, mobile plant, and heavy equipment.
- Mechanical aptitude and a practical hands-on approach, with the ability to use tools safely, follow instructions, and develop fault-finding and repair skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with tradespeople, operators, supervisors, contractors, and other site personnel.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship, ensuring maintenance and repair activities are completed accurately, safely, and to the required standards.
- A positive attitude and strong work ethic, demonstrating reliability, initiative, punctuality, and a willingness to learn from experienced tradespeople.
- An interest in troubleshooting and problem solving, with the ability to identify equipment issues, ask questions, and contribute to practical maintenance solutions.
- Basic understanding of mechanical systems and equipment, or a willingness to develop knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, braking systems, drivetrains, and associated components.
- Commitment to maintaining a clean, organised, and professional work environment, supporting high standards of housekeeping, environmental compliance, and workshop presentation.
- A desire to complete a Heavy Diesel Mechanical Apprenticeship and build a long-term career in the road transport, automotive, or heavy equipment maintenance industry, with a commitment to ongoing training and personal development.
