Build your litigation career working on complex Commonwealth Government disputes with a leading national firm The opportunity A leading national law firm is seeking an early career Lawyer to join its growing Government Dispute Resolution practice in Canberra.
You will join a close knit team of approximately 12 lawyers, working alongside experienced partners and senior practitioners across a diverse portfolio of Commonwealth Government litigation and disputes.
With an industry low billable hours target, hands on mentoring and a clear progression pathway, this is an excellent prospect to build a long term career in government litigation while maintaining work life balance.
The role
You will work across a broad range of Commonwealth Government disputes and litigation, including:
- Civil and commercial disputes
- Regulatory litigation
- Administrative law, including merits and judicial review
- Class actions and investigations
- Royal commissions and parliamentary inquiries
- Government legal advice and strategically significant matters
You will have the opportunity to:
- Draft advice, pleadings, submissions, correspondence and briefs
- Work directly with partners and senior lawyers
- Work on matters involving junior and senior counsel
- Attend client meetings, Court, settlement conferences and mediations
- Develop experience across varied disputes while building areas of specialisation
- Receive regular mentoring, feedback and support
What you'll need to succeed
This prospect would suit a Lawyer with approximately 1-3 years' post admission experience and an interest in developing their career in Commonwealth Government litigation and disputes.
Experience in either of the following would be highly regarded, but is not essential:
- Civil, administrative or commercial litigation, including ACT or Federal Courts and Tribunals
- Commonwealth Government experience across legal, commercial, contracting or contract administration functions
You will also bring
- Strong analytical and communication skills
- Excellent organisation, time management and attention to detail
- A proactive approach and ability to develop greater autonomy within a supportive team
- Eligibility to obtain an Australian Government security clearance
