Senior Systems Engineer – Design Lead

Azooa is preparing a response for a Defence Design Lead opportunity and is seeking an experienced systems engineering qualified. You will support a lead architect and technical teams with system design, integration, technical assurance and stakeholder engagement.

Engagement details

- Initial term: 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2027.
- Three possible 12-month extensions, subject to client discretion, funding, ongoing requirements and performance.
- Canberra-based, with regular in-person attendance. Off-site work may be required depending on office availability; a fixed hybrid arrangement is not confirmed.
- Minimum NV1 security clearance, maintained throughout the engagement.
- Travel may be required.

What you will do

- Support the lead architect and technical teams with coherent system design and integration.
- Provide systems engineering leadership across project teams, aligning technical designs with business needs and applicable engineering standards.
- Engage senior technical stakeholders and collaborate with Defence personnel, contractors and other delivery partners.
- Prepare technical briefs, contribute to business cases and present recommendations to decision-makers.
- Participate in technical working groups and review design, integration and assurance activities.
- Assess technical maturity, risks and readiness for acceptance.
- Contribute to and review requirements, operational concepts, test and evaluation plans, strategies and other engineering documentation.
- Support audits, governance and compliance with engineering,



security and regulatory requirements throughout the capability lifecycle.
- Identify gaps and delivery obstacles, manage technical issues and provide specialist advice within your discipline.
- Manage agreed priorities, report progress and risks, and work within the contracted scope.

Essential skills and qualifications

- Demonstrated experience in Systems Engineering Management roles.
- A degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a relevant field for communications and information systems design.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, databases and information systems.
- Excellent organisational and leadership skills.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Minimum NV1 security clearance.

Desirable experience

- Defence ICT program, technical capability design or Defence delivery experience.
- Project management experience or skills.
- Qualifications or relevant experience in Systems Engineering Management.
- Studies in network security or data-centric security models.
- Experience with the Defence Capability Lifecycle and providing security guidance across project stages.
- Broader experience in project or program management, communications, business management or information technology.
- Ability to translate user needs, engage with vendors and assess options against schedule, cost and quality.
- Understanding of Defence headquarters processes, governance, committees and technical documentation.
