About Us The Peel Harvey Biosecurity Group is a not-for-profit organisation operating under the Associations Incorporation Act 2014. It is a recognised biosecurity group under the Western Australia Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 and receives funding from the Declared Pest Account (DPA) administered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development. The DPA is made up of funds collected by a Declared Pest Rate on landowners in the Peel Harvey operational area who hold more than one hectare, and matched dollar for dollar by the state government. The Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 stipulates what Declared Pest Rates can be spent on, including the following:
- To promote public awareness of the measures being taken, or required to be taken, to control declared pests.
- To carry out measures to control declared pests.
- To purchase capital assets required in connection with the above activities.
About the role The PHBG Learning and Engagement Officer is responsible for coordinating, developing and delivering PHBG’s education and community engagement programs across the Peel Harvey Region. As part of the PHBG team, you will design, develop and deliver engaging, evidence-based learning experiences that increase awareness and understanding of biosecurity, invasive species and declared pests. The role works with schools, home education groups, libraries, community organisations and other stakeholders in PHBG’s operational area
About You
We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about environmental education and community engagement and can independently coordinate a diverse education program while working collaboratively as part of the PHBG team.
Working location will be either Waroona or Pinjarra, as preferred. Remote working arrangements (working from home) will also be considered.
The position requires regular travel throughout the Peel Harvey Region to deliver programs at schools, libraries, community venues and other locations.
A laptop and phone are provided, along with access to an organisational vehicle where available. Approved use of a personal vehicle for work related travel is reimbursed in accordance with PHBG policy.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and maintain PHBG’s existing school and community education programs, including incursions, resource box loans, school holiday activities, homeschool programs, workshops and special events.
- Design and develop new educational activities, programs and events.
- Develop and maintain a stakeholder network within the Peel Harvey Region to assist with the delivery of the Pesky Pests education program.
- Support the promotion of PHBG’s education and engagement activities through newsletters, website content, promotional materials and direct communication with stakeholders.
- Collect and evaluate participant and stakeholder feedback, monitor program participation and outcomes, and contribute to reporting on education and engagement activities.
- Represent PHBG at community events, workshops and meetings as required.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
- Relevant experience in environmental education, science communication, community engagement, teaching, program coordination or a similar role.
- Experience delivering engaging educational activities to primary school aged students.
- Ability to adapt educational content and delivery methods for different ages, abilities and audiences.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate scientific and technical information in an accessible and engaging way.
- Understanding of, and interest in, environmental, agricultural and biosecurity issues relevant to the Peel Harvey Region.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Flexible, adaptable and self motivated, with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a small team.
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout the Peel Harvey Region and work occasional flexible hours to support events and program delivery.
- High level of computer proficiency.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a friendly, approachable and skilled manner.
Desirable
- Qualifications in education, science communication, environmental science, biological science, natural resource management or a related discipline.
- Experience developing programs aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum.
- Knowledge of biosecurity and declared pest management, particularly within the Peel Harvey Region.
- Knowledge of the communities and environments within the PHBG operational area.
- Established professional, education or community networks within the Peel Harvey Region.
- Experience working collaboratively with government agencies, local governments, schools and environmental organisations.
- Experience using Google Workspace, including Docs, Sheets, Forms, Sites and Drive.
- Other requirements
The following are considered basic prerequisites for the position.
- Australian residency or eligibility to legally work in Australia.
- Current ‘C’ class driver’s license
- Ability to obtain National Police Check and a Working with Children Check.
- High level of capacity for self-motivation, developed time management skills, and an ability to meet deadlines.
