About the role
You will machine a wide variety of components, spare parts and castings on our CNC milling and machining centres. We are a jobbing shop: most work is low volume and continually changing, and even our repeat spares run in small batches. Setting and proving a job is the work, not an interruption to it.
Key responsibilities
- Set and run our milling machines — a Vtec VisionWide NF-6230AC bridge-type 5-face machining centre with auto angle head (6,000 x 2,050mm table), a Sunmill JMV-1400 vertical machining centre, a Kiheung POINT-U6 bed-type universal mill with bi-rotary head, and a King Rich knee mill
- Work out your own approach — workholding, datums, tooling, sequence of operations and cutting parameters, from the drawing and the job
- Machine components from rough castings through to finished drawing
- Interpret engineering drawings, including machining symbols, surface finishes and geometric tolerancing
- Manipulate and edit G and M code at the machine to correct and optimise as you go
- Verify your own work with micrometers, verniers, dial gauges and height gauges, and confirm tolerance before the job moves on
- Handle large components safely using overhead crane and rigging
- Maintain your machine, tooling and work area, and watch consumable life
- Support apprentices and less experienced machinists on the floor
About you
- Australian-recognised trade qualification — Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) or equivalent
- A machinist by trade rather than a machine operator — given a job and a drawing, you can work out the setup, tooling and process yourself
- Proven CNC milling experience, setting as well as running
- Sound understanding of speeds, feeds and depth of cut, and how you change them to manage surface finish, cycle time and tool life
- Knowledge of tooling types and their application, and of how different materials behave
- Confident with measuring equipment and verifying your own work to tolerance
- Able to read and interpret engineering drawings, including GD&T;
- Able to manipulate G and M code at the machine
- Mechanical aptitude — you understand what the part does and what matters about it
- Sound understanding of safe work practices and OH&S; obligations
About us
J.C. SMALE ENGINEERING has been building machines and equipment since 1962. We are a family-owned Australian manufacturer operating from Notting Hill in Melbourne's south-east, with a wholly owned facility in Malaysia.
We design, build, install and support process and test equipment for the mining, clay and brick, and general industrial sectors, working directly with our customers rather than through head contractors. We are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified. Our machine shop feeds our own builds as well as customer work, so the parts you cut go together on our floor — you see where they end up and whether they were right.
Benefits
- A permanent, full-time position in a secure, profitable, sixty-year-old business — no labour hire, no rolling contracts
- Based at our Notting Hill workshop, close to the Monash Freeway
- Overtime and weekend work is usually available for those who want it, subject to workload
- Genuine variety — low volume and always changing, so the work does not go stale
- A confirmed forward order book, including multiple new equipment builds
- A machine shop we are actively modernising — new CNC and manual machines already in, and further capability to come as the plan rolls out
- A machine shop that supports its own builds — you see the whole job, not just your part of it
- Your view on machines, tooling and capability will count — we want someone who will help shape where the shop goes, not just run what is there
- Support to broaden your capability across machines and controls
