The role
You'll build and own work across the whole platform: the patient app, the clinician portal, our internal tooling, the mobile apps and the API behind all of them. You'll report directly to our CTO - a technical co-founder who's still hands-on in the code - and work with a high degree of autonomy.
This is a role for an experienced engineer who can take a complex problem, work out what actually needs to be built, and own it through to production. You'll set your own priorities within your area, lead significant projects end-to-end, and be accountable for how they land. You'll also help the engineers around you - mentoring, reviewing, and turning ambiguous problems into clearly defined work the team can move on.
What you'll do
- Ship features across the stack. frontend, backend, database and own the day-to-day delivery of your slice of the work
- Contribute to large, complex projects alongside the team, taking clear ownership of the pieces that are yours
- Clarify assumptions and scope up front. Asking the right question before you build is worth more here than fixing it after
- Help keep production healthy - debug real patient-facing issues, respond when things break, and care that patients never feel it
- Build a working understanding of how Abby delivers care, so you know why the thing you're building matters to a patient or a clinician
Your first six months
- 1 month - you know our systems and can debug and fix production issues on your own. Onboarding here takes days, not weeks.
- 3 months - you're owning a major project or product area, setting its priorities and shipping independently.
- 6 months - you've delivered significant capability patients and clinicians rely on, and you're a go-to person for technical decisions and for helping others get unstuck.
How we build
- AI-native. AI tools (Claude Code, primarily) write most of our code. Your leverage is judgment, direction and review - knowing what to ask for,
and spotting when the answer looks right but isn't. If you're already building this way, you'll feel at home; if the idea doesn't excite you, this isn't the right role.
- Patients first. The tech comes second to the patient experience. We optimise to the level that makes sense for the problem, not for its own sake.
- In person. We're a small team that moves fastest in the same room. This role is Sydney-based and in the office regularly.
Our stack
React + TypeScript on the front end (patient app and clinician portal), Node.js + Express + PostgreSQL on the back end, AWS infrastructure, and a Swift iOS app. Around that: Datadog, Auth0, Stripe, and integrations across the Australian healthcare ecosystem.
What we're looking for
- Solid experience shipping production software. Roughly 5+ years, with real users on the other side of your code and systems you've owned in production.
- Confident across the full stack. Frontend, backend, database, infrastructure - you'll have strengths, but you can take a feature through every layer.
- You own outcomes. You set your own priorities, drive projects end-to-end, and are accountable for how they land.
- Business and product judgment. You weigh cost, effort and patient impact, and explain the trade-offs clearly to non-engineers.
- You lift others. You've mentored engineers, give useful code review, and make ambiguous problems clear for the people around you.
- A reliability mindset. You notice when things break, you fix them properly, and you care that patients never feel it.
- Comfortable with pace and change. Startup experience is a solid plus; staying effective when priorities shift is the real requirement.
- Sydney-based and keen to work alongside the team in person.
What you get
- Up to $180k + super, depending on experience
- ESOP (eligibility from 6 months)
- Real ownership of major projects at a growing healthtech startup, working directly with the founders and CTO
- A clear path to grow - the scope of what you own expands as fast as you can take it on
