Service Technician (24/7 Shift), Data Centres
Melbourne | Permanent | Up to $140k package | 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off
Off the tools. Not out of the trade.
You spent years getting your licence and learning how industrial plant actually works. Somewhere along the way the job became crawling under kit, working through rain and dust, and coming home sore. If your knowledge is the best part of what you do, this role uses that part and retires the rest.
Our client's Service Technicians work from a control room in a brand new data centre. A wall of screens, live monitoring of some of the most heavily engineered electrical and mechanical plant in the country, and a simple brief: nothing goes down, ever.
What the job actually is
You monitor the critical plant that keeps the site running. UPS systems, generators, chillers, HVAC and fire suppression, all watched through the building management system. When an alarm comes in, you verify it, assess it, act on it or elevate it. You run the planned maintenance schedule, arrange shutdowns, and manage the specialist vendors who come to site to do the physical repair work. You inspect, you test, you check their work, and you sign the system back into service.
You will not be fixing the kit yourself. When something breaks, the manufacturer's technician attends. Your trade background is what lets you catch the fault early, brief that vendor accurately, and know whether the fix is right. That's why they hire electricians for this job, and why you won't be put back on the tools once you're in it.
The roster
Fixed pattern: 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off. 12 hour shifts, 6 to 6. No rotating chaos, no on call creep. Work it out across a year and you're off more days than you're on,
in blocks long enough to actually use.
Pay and progression
Service Technician packages run to around $140k including shift allowances. From there the pathways are real, because the business is doubling in size over the next 12 months: senior and critical workplace roles or team leadership as the Melbourne operation grows. Training runs through an internal academy built by people who have run data centres for decades, and the qualifications you earn is accredited, not just internal badges.
Who you'd be joining
An Australian owned and operated data centre company with a 20 year track record, operating at the highest security tier in the industry. Its customers are government agencies, major banks and some of the world's biggest technology companies, running on infrastructure the country genuinely cannot function without. The Melbourne sites are brand new, state of the art, and the start of a much bigger build out. The name is one you'll recognise when we speak, this ad is confidential because of the security profile of the work.
What you'll need
An electrical trade qualification (HVAC and mechanical trades also considered) and experience around industrial or commercial plant, and experience around industrial or commercial plant. Australian citizenship, held for 10 years or more, because the role requires a government security clearance that the company sponsors and pays for. A clean police check. A home base within a sensible drive of Melbourne's data centre corridor, because nobody should do an hour behind the wheel after a 12 hour shift.
Most of all, the right wiring: calm when an alarm goes off, sharp on detail through a quiet night shift, happy working in a small tight team, and willing to learn kit you haven't touched before.
