Marine Mechanic
Polaris Marine Fleet Maintenance
Polaris Marine Group

Rozelle, Sydney | Permanent Full Time | 38 hours, Monday to Friday (plus some overtime!)

Work with an experienced crew that keeps our fleet moving – from Sydney Harbour to Antarctica.

About Polaris Marine

Polaris Marine Group is a leading Australian marine services provider with more than 35 years of experience delivering complex marine projects and asset maintenance solutions. Our capabilities include marine infrastructure maintenance, bridge and wharf construction, piling and sheet piling works, vessel operations and crane barge hire. Based in Rozelle, Sydney, we operate throughout Australia and support projects in some of the most remote and unique locations.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a high-performing Marine Mechanic for our PM Fleet Maintenance team. This is a hands-on role: you'll be on the tools and on the water, solving problems across our fleet of vessels, barges, marine plant and equipment, while guiding a skilled crew to get the job done safely and right the first time.

Reporting to the Fleet Manager, you'll be the go-to technical lead on the workshop floor and a key player in keeping our marine assets reliable, safe and ready for work, whether that's on Sydney Harbour, at a remote project site, or occasionally as far afield as Antarctica.

What You'll Be Doing

- Lead from the front: run the day-to-day work of the PM Fleet Maintenance team, set the standard for quality and safety, and coach your crew on the job.

- Keep the fleet moving: carry out planned, preventative and breakdown maintenance across vessels, barges, marine plant and equipment.

- Find it and fix it: diagnose faults in diesel engines, hydraulics,

12/24V DC electrical systems, pumps, winches, cranes and auxiliary machinery.

- Go deep on the drivetrain: maintain and repair propulsion systems, gearboxes and drive systems.

- Get hands-on with the big jobs: vessel slipping, docking and refits, plus general hull and structural repairs.

- Sign it off with confidence: run pre-start and post-repair checks so every asset returns to service safe and ready.

- Keep it on record: log work, faults and parts in our maintenance management system (CMMS) and flag parts needs early.

- Build the next generation: mentor apprentices and help junior team members grow their skills.

- Make it better: spot opportunities to improve asset reliability and the way we work.

- See the country: travel to wharves, on-water locations and project sites across Australia when needed.

About You

To be successful in this role, you'll bring:

- A trade qualification as a Marine, Diesel, Plant or Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, or similar

- Solid hands-on experience maintaining marine engines, vessels, plant or heavy equipment

- Leading hand or team leader experience, or the drive and ability to step up into leadership

- Sharp troubleshooting and fault-finding skills, and the ability to read manuals and schematics

- A safety-first mindset, with a sound understanding of WHS,

risk controls and permit requirements

- Confidence with computers (Word, Excel) and maintenance management systems, or a quick learner

- A current driver licence, and comfort working on gangways, vertical ladders, on-water and in engine rooms

- A proactive, detail-focused approach, working just as well on your own as with the team

Tickets & Licences

- MED Class qualification

- Confined Space & Working at Heights

- General Construction Induction (White Card)

- NSW boat driving licence

- Forklift licence

- Crane tickets

- MR or HR driver licence

- Previous marine industry experience

Why Join Polaris Marine?

- Competitive salary package – recognising your skills and leadership

- Extra financial incentives – for travel and remote project work

- Work you won't find anywhere else – vessels, barges, crane and heavy marine equipment

- Unique locations – across Australia, and occasionally as far as Antarctica

- A waterfront workshop – in Rozelle, right on Sydney Harbour

- Monday to Friday – with a secure, permanent full-time role

- Supportive leadership – and a positive, safety-focused team culture

- Room to grow – with long-term career pathways in a growing Australian company
