Job Description
Hairdressing Technician A different career opportunity for an experienced hairdresser n
Are you an experienced hairdresser who is still passionate about doing hair, but interested in developing your career beyond the salon?
n
TJ's Hair Company is looking for a Part-Time Hairdressing Technician to join our team in Eltham.
n
This is a hands‐on role where you will continue to use your hairdressing skills while developing specialist knowledge in
professional hair products, colour, technical support, product testing, salon support and digital content
.
n
This is not a hairdressing teaching position.
n
We are not looking for someone who wants to leave hairdressing behind and simply teach others what they already know. We are looking for a hairdresser who wants to
keep doing hair while learning a different side of the professional hair industry.
About TJ's Hair Company n
TJ's Hair Company is a family‐owned Australian wholesale hairdressing supply company based in Eltham.
n
We supply professional hair salons throughout Victoria, including the professional
Medavita
range.
n
Our business is about much more than selling products. We work with professional hairdressers and salons to help them understand products, solve technical problems and achieve the best possible results.
n
Our technical team therefore needs to understand both
hairdressing and the products used by hairdressers
.
About the role n
As a Hairdressing Technician, you will initially spend approximately
2–3 days per week
working within our business.
n
You will be expected to continue doing hair while learning our products and developing your technical knowledge.
n
Your role will include:
n
n
Using professional hair products yourself to develop a thorough understanding of their performance and application.
n
Learning our product ranges, ingredients, technology and recommended applications.
n
Developing your knowledge of colour, hair chemistry and technical product information.
n
Providing technical assistance and product advice to professional hairdressers and salons.
n
Researching technical information and working through product and hair‐related problems.
n
Assisting with product testing and evaluation.
n
Assisting with salon demonstrations and technical presentations.
n
Developing educational and technical material for salons and hairdressers.
n
Creating hairdressing work that can be used for social media and promotional content.
n
Photographing and recording your own hairdressing work and helping turn it into qualified digital content.
n
Assisting with retail sales and customer service.
n
Assisting with warehouse and stock‐related duties.
n
Working across different areas of our business as required.
n
n
The role will develop as your knowledge, skills and confidence grow.
You will be expected to learn n
One of the most important things to understand about this position is that
you are not expected to arrive knowing everything.
n
We will train you in our products, product ranges and technical approach.
n
However, we are looking for someone who enjoys learning and has the ability to develop knowledge independently.
n
You will need to be comfortable:
n
n
Reading technical information.
n
Researching information.
n
Asking questions.
n
Thinking through problems.
n
Understanding why products work the way they do.
n
Applying recent information to practical hairdressing situations.
n
Developing your knowledge over time.
n
We can teach you about our products. We can't teach you how to think, learn or use a computer. About you n
n
5+ years of hairdressing experience.
n
Strong practical hairdressing skills, preferably with good colour experience.
n
A genuine interest in hair, colour and professional products.
n
A desire to continue doing hair.
n
Curiosity and a genuine willingness to learn.
n
The ability to read, research and understand technical information.
n
Good problem‐solving skills and initiative.
n
Good communication skills, or a genuine desire to improve them.
n
Confidence dealing with professional hairdressers and salon owners.
n
Good organisation and time‐management skills.
n
The ability to work independently and as part of a small team.
n
Confidence using a computer for everyday work.
n
A willingness to learn how to create professional digital content from your own hairdressing work.
n
A varied role within the hair industry n
This position gives you exposure to areas of the professional hair industry that most hairdressers don't normally experience.
n
You will have the opportunity to develop knowledge and experience in:
n
n
Professional hair products and product technology.
n
Colour and hair chemistry.
n
Technical troubleshooting.
n
Product testing and evaluation.
n
Technical support.
n
Salon demonstrations.
n
Hairdressing education.
n
Wholesale and retail.
n
Social media and digital content.
n
Product marketing and promotion.
n
n
You will continue to develop as a hairdresser while gaining skills that can lead to
other career opportunities within the professional hair industry
.
This role is probably not for you if... n
We want to be clear about what this position involves.
n
This role is unlikely to suit you if you:
n
n
No longer want to do hairdressing.
n
Are looking for a way to move completely away from working with hair.
n
Want to simply teach hairdressing techniques rather than learn new technical knowledge yourself.
n
Believe your existing experience means you don't need to learn anything new.
n
Don't enjoy reading, researching or learning.
n
Are uncomfortable using computers.
n
Don't want to be involved in retail, warehouse or other areas of a small business.
n
n
We are looking for someone who wants to develop — not someone who believes they have already finished developing.
What we offer n
n
Permanent part‐time employment.
n
Approximately 2–3 days per week initially.
n
$35–$45 per hour + superannuation
, depending on skills, experience and technical knowledge.
n
Training and development in professional hair products and technical work.
n
The opportunity to work with leading professional product ranges.
n
Exposure to product testing and technical development.
n
Opportunities to develop education, marketing and digital content skills.
n
A varied role within a family‐owned Australian business.
n
A friendly and relaxed working environment.
n
The opportunity to develop a longer‐term career pathway within the professional hair industry.
n
n
There may also be opportunities to perform hairdressing work in our studio at TJ's Hair Company as part of your ongoing development.
