Büro North is a design and strategy studio for people and place — from details to districts. For two decades we have worked in user experience, customer-centred design and wayfinding, across transport, health, education, culture, sport and tourism, from studios in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and London.
We are looking for a Project Coordinator to keep our wayfinding projects moving. These are large, complex, multi-user places — integrated care precincts, transport interchanges, civic and cultural buildings, public gardens — with long consultant lists, staged approvals and real fabrication and construction at the end of them.
This is the role that holds the programme, chases the answer, and makes sure the thing that gets built is the thing that was designed.
Who this suits
We are deliberately open on where you come from.
An interior designer who has moved toward delivery
You trained and practised in interior design, and found you were better at — and more interested in — running the project than drawing it. You can read a set, you know what a design intends, and you can tell when a substitution quietly breaks it.
A coordinator from a builder or construction background
You have coordinated from the contractor or subcontractor side — programme, submittals, shop drawings, site. You know how things actually get built, what a realistic lead time looks like, and how to hold a trade to a date. What you may not have done is sit on the design side of the table; we will help with that.
What you will do
- Own project programmes, deliverables and internal resourcing across several concurrent jobs.
- Act as the day-to-day point of contact for clients, architects, consultants, contractors and fabricators.
- Run meetings, minutes, RFIs,
design issue registers and action tracking.
- Track scope, fee, time and variations with the project lead, and flag drift early.
- Coordinate documentation issues, approvals and staged sign-offs.
- Manage FF&E; and signage schedules, samples, prototypes, procurement and supplier relationships.
- Review shop drawings and samples against the design intent, and escalates what does not match.
- Attend site inspections, prototype reviews and installation, and run defects through to close-out.
What you will bring
- Around 3 years coordinating design, interiors, fitout, signage or construction projects.
- The ability to read drawings and specifications and understand what they are asking for.
- Organisational rigour — you close things out rather than leave them open.
- Confidence with clients, consultants and trades on the phone and on site, not only by email.
- Familiarity with construction contracts, consultant coordination and procurement processes.
- Comfort with programme and project tracking tools; the Adobe suite and Bluebeam are useful, as is a working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD.
- Judgement about what needs raising now and what can wait until Thursday.
A formal qualification in interior design, construction management, architecture or a related field is welcome, but demonstrated coordination experience matters more.
What we offer
- Projects that shape how people move through public places, at a scale you can point to.
- A studio that treats strategy, wayfinding and interiors as one discipline rather than three.
- Direct exposure to design decisions, not just the paperwork that follows them.
- Hybrid working, and colleagues across four cities.
- The chance to work and learn from the best Project Directors in the market
