Where You’ll Be Working

John Hunter Hospital is the leading referral centre for maternity and birthing services in Newcastle and across Hunter New England. As the centralised hub for complex midwifery and birthing care, the service supports women and families across all levels of maternity care.

You’ll be working within a modern, state-of-the-art maternity service as part of the John Hunter Health & Innovation Precinct. Our maternity team is known for its clinical excellence, collaborative culture, and strong commitment to professional growth. Staff are supported, respected, and encouraged to innovate, with a shared focus on delivering exceptional care to women and families.

About the Role

As the Clinical Midwife Educator (CME) - Maternity, you will play a key role in shaping the capability, confidence, and clinical excellence of our midwifery workforce.

You will lead and deliver education programs, support junior and developing midwives, and promote a culture of continuous learning and quality improvement across the service. On a daily basis, you will facilitate teaching sessions, support clinical skill development, mentor new and transitioning staff, and contribute to strengthening clinical practice standards.

You will be supported by Midwifery Unit Managers, Senior Midwives,



and the Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery (Maternity & Gynaecology). Mentorship is embedded within the service, and you will be encouraged to pursue further professional development, innovation projects, and secondment opportunities across the maternity service. This is a role where you can grow as a clinical leader while supporting others to thrive.

You are a clinically credible midwife with a passion for education, leadership, and advancing midwifery practice.

Essential Requirements

- Current midwifery registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Postgraduate qualification in Midwifery (preferably Masters level) with a demonstrated focus on education, teaching, and clinical leadership.
- Eligibility to drive and willingness to travel for work purposes.
