Steel Fabrication Shop – Leading Hand / Boilermaker / Welder

The fabrication shop leading hand is responsible to the Fabrication & Operations Manager. The duties of this role are for the fabrication, monitoring and inspection for compliance with Workshop drawings, Project Specification and Quality Plans of the fabrication carried out within the workshop. This is a full-time, hands-on fabrication workshop leadership role where you will lead boilermakers, welders, and apprentices while actively fabricating structural steel structures or temporary works components.

Key responsibilities

Supervise and mentor: Guide a team of fabricators, welders, and apprentices, providing clear daily instructions and on-the-job training.

Workflow coordination: Delegate daily tasks, monitor production schedules, and ensure materials and resources are ready.

Performance support: Lead by example, assess work progress, and help troubleshoot fabrication or assembly issues on the floor.

Read fabrication drawings / site sketches: Interpret complex technical drawings, structural plans, shop specifications, understanding weld procedures and weld prep symbols to QA specifications to AS5131 & AS/NZS1554.





Metal processing: Mark out, cut, bend, shape, and fit steel sections using saws, drills, torches, and cropper.

Welding & assembly: Join structural steel components using MIG or Stick welding processes to strict tolerances & Aust standards AS/NZS 1554.

Logistics: loading / unloading trucks, moving components around the yard with forklift or side loader.

Quality checks: Inspect dimensions, alignment, and weld quality (size, penetration, precision) before parts move to the next stage or coating.

Workplace safety: Enforce Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) rules, ensure workshop & yard is in a clean and acceptable condition to ensure the protected and effective operation of the organisation.

Continuous improvement: Identify workflow bottlenecks and recommend ways to improve workshop efficiency.

Qualifications

Trade Certificate: Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade, Boilermaking, or equivalent.

Current Construction White Card

Valid driver's license

Relevant machinery tickets (e.g., forklift, dogman)
