We are seeking a PhD candidate to join a broader kelp conservation research program at UNSW examining how policy commitments can lead to real conservation and restoration action.
The project will investigate how kelp forests are governed from local to global scales, including legislation, regulation, institutional arrangements, financing, monitoring, implementation, and the conditions that enable effective conservation delivery.
The candidate will work closely with the Kelp Forest Alliance (KFA), a global network connecting hundreds of researchers, practitioners, conservation organisations, policymakers, and community partners working across kelp forest conservation, restoration, and management. Through KFA’s regional and local working groups, the student will engage directly with people implementing conservation in different jurisdictions, test research findings against real-world challenges, build an international professional network, and help co-develop practical pathways for stronger policy and conservation action.
Students will also be encouraged to develop their own research questions within the wider kelp conservation program.
We welcome applicants from public policy, environmental governance, political science, geography, environmental law, conservation science, environmental management, marine science, and related fields. Prior kelp expertise is not required.
The selected candidate will be nominated through the competitive UNSW Scientia PhD Scholarship Scheme. The scholarship provides a 3.5-year stipend at the UNSW HDR rate ($39,206 p.a. in 2026, indexed annually), plus up to $25,000 for global mobility and research development. Project nomination - UNSW Science
Eligibility: Open to domestic applicants, including Australian and Current Zealand citizens, Australian permanent residents, and permanent humanitarian visa holders.
