Key Responsibilities:
- 2.1 Seaworthiness Delivery & Integration.
- Plan, develop and deliver seaworthiness outcomes for the combat system upgrade scope of work, in accordance with the organisation's Seaworthiness Management System (SMS) and applicable regulatory framework.
- Integrate combat system seaworthiness evidence, assessments and certifications into the Whole Ship Seaworthiness Case, maintaining traceability between design changes and the ship's overarching seaworthiness argument.
- Develop and maintain the project's Seaworthiness Management Plan, including the schedule of evidence required to support certification milestones.
- Prepare seaworthiness certification packages and support Safe-to-Operate / Secure-to-Proceed submissions to platform authorities and regulators.
- Identify and manage interfaces between combat system changes and other ship systems (platform, safety, mission systems) that may affect seaworthiness.
- Deliver a complete set of Seaworthiness Management Artefacts (SwMAs) to the Destroyer Group (DESGRP) that have been reviewed, updated, endorsed as required, and are suitable to support Seaworthiness and Sea Release outcomes, no later than 12 February 2027.
2.2 Work Group Coordination
- Coordinate the activities of multi-disciplinary work groups (combat systems engineering, platform systems, integration and test, safety case, logistics) contributing to seaworthiness outcomes.
- Chair and facilitate the project's Seaworthiness Working Group, setting agendas, tracking actions to closure, and driving resolution of cross- functional issues.
- Act as the primary point of liaison with platform seaworthiness stakeholders, including the Design Authority, classification society, and Navy seaworthiness regulator.
- Ensure work group outputs - design changes, test results, and safety assessments - are captured, quality-assured and delivered into the seaworthiness case on schedule.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships across engineering,
safety and program disciplines to support timely, collaborative decision- making.
2.3 Risk Management
- Establish and maintain the seaworthiness risk register for the combat system upgrade, capturing hazards, risks and their treatment status.
- Lead hazard identification and risk assessment activities, coordinating input from technical and safety specialists across work groups.
- Develop, implement and monitor risk treatment and mitigation plans, escalating significant or residual risk to project governance for acceptance at the appropriate level of authority.
- Provide independent assurance that seaworthiness risk is being appropriately identified, treated and accepted, consistent with as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP) principles.
- Monitor emerging risk arising from design changes, trials outcomes or schedule pressure, and advise the Project Manager on potential impacts to seaworthiness certification.
2.4 Governance & Reporting
- Provide regular reporting on seaworthiness progress, risks and issues to the Project Manager and relevant project governance and review boards.
- Represent seaworthiness interests at design reviews, milestone reviews and engineering change control boards.
- Maintain documentation and audit trails to support internal assurance activities and external seaworthiness audits or reviews.
- Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement of seaworthiness processes across the project and wider program.
Essential:
- Experience in the conduct and writing of SwMAs.
- Degree qualification in engineering (marine, mechanical, electrical or systems) or equivalent significant experience in a naval or maritime engineering environment.
- Demonstrated experience in seaworthiness, safety case, or systems certification and assurance roles within a naval or maritime context.
- Sound knowledge of seaworthiness management frameworks, risk management principles and safety case methodologies.
- Proven ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary technical work groups and manage competing stakeholder priorities.
- Strong risk management skills, including hazard identification, risk assessment and treatment planning.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to senior governance forums.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the security clearance specified for this position.
- Extensive RAN Combat System experience.
Desirable:
- Experience working within a combat system integration or upgrade project.
- Familiarity with relevant classification society rules and naval regulatory certification processes.
- Formal qualification or training in risk management, systems engineering or safety case development.
- Project management qualification (e.g. PMP, PRINCE2) or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- Has no physical limitations to undertake a ship visit/s and has a White Card.
- Weapons Electrical Charge Endorsed (WE CQ).
SFIA Skills Sought:
The application of appropriate methods to assure safety during all lifecycle phases of safety-related systems developments, including maintenance and re-use. These include safety hazard and risk analysis, safety requirements specification, safety-related system architectural design, formal method design, safety validation and verification, and safety case preparation.
SFEN Level 4:
Contributes to the identification, analysis and documentation of hazards, and to the capture, evaluation and specification of safety requirements. Analyses and documents safety validation results. Contributes to the development and maintenance of project safety assurance plans, and gathers safety assurance evidence for safety case preparation.
