Your Next Employer
Our client is a family-owned cropping business, about 23km from Condobolin, NSW. They farm around 9,000ha of irrigated and dryland country, growing cotton under irrigation alongside seed canola, bird seed, wheat and barley. They irrigate 2,000ha today, and development will bring a further 1,500ha under irrigation over the next several years. Water comes from river allocation and bores, so the business is set up to carry a dry year.
You'll work with a fleet that is late-model for the most part, including Steiger, Magnum and John Deere 8000 series tractors, three Case IH combines with flex headers and chaser bins, air seeders and 12m row planters. Precision ag is in everyday use, with variable-rate spreading, zone applications and T3RRA Cutta land forming.
The team is 7 to 8 full-time staff, with casuals added through the peaks. It's a flat structure, with no layer between the operators and the owner. He works around his people's family commitments, and the team puts in long weeks when the work is on, with time off when it eases.
The Role
You'll report to the owner and split your time between the spray rig and general operating.
Spraying takes up 30 to 40% of the year, most of it on a Case IH Patriot self-propelled sprayer. You'll share the program with another operator and work to the agronomist's recommendations. Spraying comes in blocks, and the gaps between them can run to six weeks or more.
You won't be isolated to the sprayer, and between spray jobs you'll be operating, harvesting and watering with the rest of the team.
You'll manage your own equipment and schedule day to day. Warranty work and major services go to the dealer.
Key Responsibilities
- Run the spray rigs. Operate the self-propelled sprayer, and the tow-behind rig as needed, to the recommendations for each job.
- Set up and calibrate. Calibrate the rig, and mix and handle chemicals to label.
- Keep the records.
Keep application records complete and current.
- Operate across the program. Run tractors and cropping machinery through sowing, in-crop work and general operating.
- Work the harvest. Play a full part in harvest operations.
- Water in season. Carry out watering on the irrigated country.
- Look after your gear. Clean down the rig between jobs, keep on top of routine upkeep and report faults early.
What You Bring
We're looking for an individual who takes pride in their work, thinks on their feet, and is happy to turn their hand to whatever the season throws at them.
Essential:
- Spraying experience on a broadacre cropping operation, including a self-propelled sprayer (Patriot or similar).
- Current ChemCert accreditation.
- Machinery operating experience across a cropping program, including harvest.
- A handy, practical approach to basic maintenance on the gear you run (trade qualification not required).
- Current Driver's Licence.
- Australian work rights.
Advantageous:
- Irrigation experience on a cropping operation.
- HR or HC truck licence.
What You'll Gain
- Package: High 30's to low 40's per hour + Super, with the rate set on experience, plus a work ute with reasonable personal use.
- Housing: A house on farm, suitable for a family.
- Hours: No set roster. Around 50 hours a week on average, fewer in the quieter stretches and more through spraying and harvest peaks, and you're paid for every hour.
- Growth: Scope to move toward the areas that interest you, such as crop management or laser bucket work on the irrigation development.
