Organisational Impact

Social Compass Group is partnering with United Housing Cooperative (UHC), a community-based housing organisation in Melbourne’s Northern and Western suburbs to appoint one, potentially two, Independent Directors to its Board.

What sets UHC apart is its co-operative model. The organisation is governed by a Board elected democratically by its members, with member, renter and resident participation central to how UHC operates and makes decisions. This creates a strong connection between governance, community and the people who live in UHC homes.

UHC currently manages 220 properties across seven Melbourne municipalities, 160 of which are owned by Homes Victoria, 29 by the Lions Club and UHC directly owns 31 properties.

UHC is a grassroots organisation with a robust community focus, as it enters its next strategic phase, the Board is looking to strengthen capability while retaining the values and community connection that sit at the heart of the organisation.

About you

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who bring experience in:

- Governance, risk and regulatory environments
- Housing, community housing or government processes




- Working within compliance and regulatory frameworks
- Strategic thinking, understanding good governance & constructive contribution at Board level
- Community-based for-purpose organisations

Previous Board experience will be highly regarded, however, we are also open to an emerging or first-time Director who brings strong relevant experience in housing or the cooperative model, understands good governance and is ready to make the transition from executive or professional leadership into the Boardroom.

Just as important as technical capability is cultural alignment. We are looking for people who value grassroots organisations, understand the importance of member voice in the co-operative model, and can strengthen governance without losing sight of what makes a community-based organisation distinctive.
