About the Role
We have an exciting new opportunity for an AI Solutions Specialist to help turn the firm’s investment in AI into practical improvements in how our legal and business services teams work. The role will focus on identifying valuable use cases, building effective solutions and helping teams adopt them in day-to-day work.
Reporting to Jan Hards, Partner and Head of AI, you will join a small, high-impact team working directly with lawyers and business services teams. You will identify practical AI opportunities, build workflows using the firm’s AI tools and help teams embed those solutions in their day-to-day work. You will assist the firm in taking use cases from an initial idea through scoping, testing and implementation to adoption, combining hands-on technical capability with strong interpersonal and coaching skills.
This role offers direct exposure to legal practice, technology implementation and firm-wide change. You will have substantial scope to shape how JWS identifies, develops and adopts AI solutions, with genuine career development opportunities as the firm’s AI capability evolves.
The role is Sydney-based, though candidates in other JWS office locations will be considered. Some travel between offices may be involved to support firm-wide engagement and adoption.
Your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Work with lawyers and business services teams to identify, scope and prioritise practical opportunities where AI can improve legal and non-legal workflows, enhance client service, and generate efficiencies.
- Work hands-on with colleagues to design, build, test and refine AI-enabled automations and workflows using Harvey, Microsoft Copilot or other firm-approved generative AI tools that solve legal or business problems for lawyers and support staff.
- Build engagement with AI across the firm through proactive outreach, one-to-one coaching, small-group sessions and tailored demonstrations. You will help colleagues identify relevant uses for approved AI tools, develop confidence through practical application and incorporate effective solutions into their day-to-day work.
- Help practice groups and business services teams build and refine reusable prompt libraries, playbooks and workflow templates that can be applied consistently across the firm.
- Assist lawyers to translate legal processes and pain points into clear use cases, prompts and simple workflows that can be built, tested and iterated quickly with the people who will use them.
- Apply the firm’s responsible AI, governance, confidentiality and information security requirements throughout the design, testing and deployment of solutions, escalating risks or uncertainties when necessary.
- Monitor developments in legal AI tools and platforms, assess their relevance to the firm and translate worthwhile developments into practical recommendations, experiments or solutions.
About You
You are passionate about applying AI to legal practice and thrive on turning ideas into practical, working solutions. You also bring:
- Current or recent experience in an AI, legal technology, legal engineering or innovation role within a law firm, professional services organisation or provider of technology solutions to the legal sector.
- A legal background or legal practice experience is highly regarded, including an understanding of legal workflows, drafting, document review or qualified services delivery gained through legal practice, paralegal experience, or working closely with lawyers.
- Demonstrated experience using generative AI tools such as Harvey and Microsoft Copilot to solve workplace problems, including designing prompts, configuring repeatable workflows and testing outputs with users. You do not need to be a software developer, but you must be comfortable learning new tools and building practical solutions with minimal supervision.
- Confidence working directly with and speaking to lawyers and stakeholders at all levels, with the ability to build rapport and trust quickly.
- Excellent interpersonal, coaching and communication skills, with a proven ability to engage,
upskill and build confidence in non-technical users.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate a business or legal process into a clear, buildable use case.
- Solid project management skills, including the ability to scope, prioritise and deliver initiatives with minimal oversight.
- Experience designing and delivering training, demonstrations or coaching sessions to lawyers, partners and non-technical staff.
- A genuine ‘doer’ mindset where you are comfortable getting hands-on and iterating quickly.
- Exposure to other AI or legal technology platforms, including Claude and ChatGPT, is desirable. Familiarity with responsible AI principles, governance frameworks or technology risk controls will also be well regarded.
- A curious and proactive approach, with the resilience and adaptability to work in a fast-moving area. You are energised by helping others learn and adopt new technology, while remaining pragmatic about what will deliver genuine value.
- Sound judgement about confidentiality, information security and the responsible use of AI, including the confidence to identify concerns and seek guidance when required.
