Western Health’s Paediatric Department operates at the vital centre of Melbourne’s rapidly growing western corridor. Based at Sunshine Hospital within the purpose-built Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s building, our service delivers care to over 28,000–30,000 paediatric emergency presentations and manages approximately 5,000 inpatient admissions annually across our 24-bed Children’s Ward, dedicated NICU, and Special Care Nursery.

As our Paediatric Registrar, you will join an energetic, collegiate team providing acute inpatient care, emergency consultations, and comprehensive outpatient management. Whether you are an unaccredited registrar looking to consolidate advanced acute skills or an RACP Advanced Trainee seeking formal accredited core training, this 3-month appointment offers intensive clinical learning within a culture designed to support, teach, and value you.

Your Scope & Clinical Experience

Working alongside Consultant Paediatricians, paediatric fellows, and multidisciplinary allied health teams, your remit includes:





- Acute Inpatient Care: Manage a broad spectrum of acute paediatric and adolescent medical and surgical admissions within our 24-bed Children’s Ward, participating in a balanced after-hours roster.
- Paediatric Emergency Collaboration: Deliver timely inpatient consultations and clinical advice to the busy Paediatric Emergency Department.
- Subspecialty & General Outpatients: Build diagnostic acumen across busy general paediatric outpatient clinics alongside subspecialty clinics including paediatric cardiology, allergy, adolescent medicine, dermatology, and endocrinology.
- Protected Simulation & Learning: Participate in regular, protected ward and clinic simulation scenarios, weekly unit education meetings, and morbidity and mortality reviews.
- Teaching & Junior Doctor Mentorship: Lead bedside teaching, supervise junior medical staff, and mentor medical students from The University of Melbourne and Notre Dame University.

What You Bring

- Medical Registration: Recognised Australian medical qualification with current medical registration with AHPRA.
- Training Standing: Registration with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in an accredited training pathway, or proven experience as an unaccredited paediatric registrar / senior medical officer ready to step up.
- Clinical Competence: Demonstrated clinical reasoning and procedural skills in managing acute paediatric emergencies and complex paediatric presentations.
- Collaborative Mindset: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to connect with children, families, nursing colleagues, and cross-functional teams.
- Mandatory Clearances: Satisfactory National Police Check, Working with Children Check, and Immunisation Clearance prior to commencement.
