Chinova Resources is a private Australian resources company owned by the Shanxi Donghui Group of Companies, with principal activities focussed in North‐West Queensland. The company has existing operations at Osborne, south of Cloncurry, as well as several development projects and extensive exploration activity on a large tenement holding in the region. Chinova has other open pit and potential underground projects expected to commence.
Key projects include the Osborne copper-gold processing facility, the world’s highest grade molybdenum and rhenium deposit; and Mount Elliott, our flagship project, which contains one of the largest copper-gold, mineralised systems discovered in Australia.
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join the Technical Services Team, sharing Chinova’s values and its commitment to safety and the environment.
About the role The Geotechnical Engineer – Underground is responsible for providing high-quality geotechnical engineering advice and support to enable the safe and effective operation of the underground mine. The role will provide geotechnical input across mine design, development, production, ground support, ground control, monitoring and operational risk management. The position will work closely with Mining, Technical Services, Engineering, Maintenance and HSE teams to identify and manage ground-related risks and ensure mining activities are undertaken in accordance with approved designs, standards and statutory requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and promote a zero-harm safety culture where all workers and contractors actively participate in hazard identification and risk management
- Ensure compliance with applicable Queensland legislation, Mining and Quarrying Health and Safety Act 1999 (MQSH Act 1999)
including the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, associated Regulations and Codes of Practice
- Maintain compliance with the site safety management system (JSA/JHA, risk assessments, emergency response plans, permit to work systems)
- Provide clear, practical geotechnical advice to underground supervisors and operators
- Conduct regular underground geotechnical inspections and review ground conditions
- Provide geotechnical input into daily and weekly mining planning and support supervisors in managing changing ground conditions
- Provide geotechnical input into life-of-mine, medium-term and short-term mine planning and review mine designs for geotechnical risks
- Support the implementation and continuous improvement of the Ground Control Management Plan and develop geotechnical standards, guidelines and procedures
- Identify emerging geotechnical risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies
- Establish and maintain effective relations with internal stakeholders, contractors, regulators, indigenous and local communities
About you
- Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline
- 5 years' relevant geotechnical engineering experience, preferably with significant underground hard-rock mining experience
- Demonstrated experience in underground hard-rock mining
- Demonstrated experience in geotechnical engineering and ground control within an operating underground mine
- Understanding of underground mining methods and ground control principles
- Experience with ground support design and assessment
- Experience undertaking underground geotechnical inspections and ground condition assessments
- Strong understanding of rock mechanics and rock mass behaviour
- Ability to interpret geological and structural information
- Strong leadership, communication, and people-management skills
This is a permanent FIFO opportunity on a family friendly 8/6 roster. Our selection process involves interviews, skills assessment, and pre-employment medical.
