About us
Sherlock Contracting Group (SCG) is a 100% Indigenous-owned Western Australian multidiscipline contractor with offices in Newman and Port Hedland. We deliver structural, mechanical and piping, electrical and instrumentation, civil and earthworks, mine rehabilitation and closure, and facilities maintenance services to Tier 1 resources clients across the Pilbara.
We have been awarded a multi-year progressive rehabilitation and mine closure earthworks contract with a Tier 1 iron ore producer in the Pilbara. The contract mobilises in Q4 2026 and runs for multiple years, so this is a permanent full-time position with genuine long-term security not a short-term shutdown or project hire.
The opportunity
This is the site survey role on the project. You will own survey control, machine guidance, volumes and conformance across landform reshaping, batter recontouring, drainage, growth media placement, scarification and seeding reporting to the Project Manager and working alongside the Project Engineer and two Schedule 26 Supervisors.
What you will be doing
- Establish and maintain project survey control and verify it regularly (MGA2020 / MGA94 Zone 51, AHD)
- Set out landform designs, batters, crests and toes, drainage, haul routes, borrow areas and growth media stockpiles
- Build, upload and maintain machine guidance models for dozers, graders and excavators; verify machine calibrations and carry out routine field checks
- Conduct UAV and conventional survey pickups; process photogrammetry into surfaces, DTMs and contour plans
- Produce volume,
progress and reconciliation reporting to support monthly progress claims and Work Package Instruction reporting
- Complete conformance and as-built survey against design tolerances (typically ±0.5° on slope and ±100 mm on crest position) and compile conformance and handover packs for the client
- Maintain survey data management, drawing and model registers, and revision control
- Support the Project Manager and Project Engineer with quantity take-offs, forecast to complete and early identification of rework
- Participate fully in the project HSE system risk assessments, pre-starts, Take 5s and work within ground disturbance permits and heritage exclusion zones
What you will bring
- Diploma of Surveying, Associate Degree or Bachelor in Surveying and Spatial Sciences or demonstrated equivalent field experience
- Minimum 3 years' surveying experience on mine sites or bulk civil earthworks (open pit, rehabilitation, roads, dams or tailings)
- Competent with GNSS and robotic total stations (Trimble, Leica or Topcon)
- Hands-on machine guidance experience model preparation, upload and verification (Trimble Earthworks / GCS900, Leica MC1, Topcon 3D-MC or similar)
- Confident working as the only surveyor on site: self-directed, well organised and comfortable making the call in the field
- Sound Excel and reporting skills
- Current C-class driver's licence
Highly regarded
- Mine rehabilitation, closure or landform earthworks experience
- UAV survey and photogrammetry processing — Propeller, Pix4D, Trimble Stratus or similar; CASA Remote Pilot Licence (RePL) highly regarded
- Pilbara iron ore experience and familiarity with Tier 1 client rehabilitation standards and conformance reporting
- Experience mentoring or developing trainee survey and field staff
What we offer
- Full time position on a multi-year contract real continuity of work
- Competitive salary, negotiated on experience, with annual review
- FIFO ex Perth, or a Port Hedland / Newman point of hire if you are Pilbara-based
- Flights, camp accommodation and all meals provided; site allowances as applicable
- 8:6 or 4:3 roster options, 12 hour days, genuine work / life balance
- A 100% Indigenous-owned business with direct Traditional Owner connection and a genuine commitment to local and Nyamal employment
