Bridge Breakthrough Science and Patient Care. Shape the Next Generation of Renal Medicine.

Clinical trials are where tomorrow's standard of care is discovered today. For patients living with complex chronic kidney disease, access to investigational therapies offers renewed hope and vital clinical options.

At Western Health, our Renal Services unit is a leader in academic nephrology and innovative trial delivery across Melbourne's booming western corridor. Working across Phase I first-in-human through to Phase IV multicentre international trials, our active research pipeline directly tackles renal disease, kidney supportive care, and emerging therapeutics.

As the Nephrology Research Registrar / Clinical Research Fellow, you will step into an academic clinical role. Balancing advanced clinical nephrology with hands-on clinical trial coordination, you will manage trial participants, spearhead investigator-initiated projects, author peer-reviewed publications, and present findings at national and international conferences—all backed by consultant nephrologists and research coordinators.

Your Scope & Academic Impact

Based at Sunshine Hospital within the forward-thinking Western Health at Home division, your portfolio includes:

- High-Impact Clinical Trials: Lead day-to-day medical oversight for patients enrolled across Phase I–IV clinical studies,

ensuring strict protocol adherence, adverse event reporting, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) compliance.
- Academic Publishing & Project Leadership: Design and execute clinical research protocols, author manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and present clinical study outcomes at major scientific meetings.
- Specialist Outpatient & Inpatient Care: Maintain clinical currency through 2–3 outpatient clinics weekly (general nephrology and kidney supportive care) alongside inpatient consults, supported by senior consultant staff.
- Translational Database Governance: Drive patient registry contributions, complication surveillance protocols, and clinical trial participant recruitment databases.
- Mentorship & Educational Leadership: Supervise junior medical staff, basic physician trainees, and medical students across renal inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Balanced Service Commitment: Participate in a sustainable after-hours and weekend on-call roster consistent with a senior registrar/post-graduate fellow profile.

Why Pursue Your Research Fellowship at Western Health?

- Accelerate Your Academic Trajectory: Gain practical experience in trial design, ethics committee submissions, commercial and investigator-led protocols, and grant delivery—positioning you for successful consultant appointments or PhD pathways.
- Cooperative Multidisciplinary Support:

Work closely with trial coordinators, research nurses, academic nephrologists, and pharmacy specialists in an environment that prioritises clinician wellbeing.
- Maximised Take-Home Pay: Positioned at HM25–HM30 under the Victorian Public Health Sector Doctors in Training Agreement, accompanied by 12% statutory superannuation and full public hospital salary packaging (up to $11,660 in tax-free general living expenses plus meal/entertainment card allowances).
- Continuous Learning: Access professional development resources, conference support, and clinical education pathways via the Western Health Learning Academy (WHA).

What You Bring

- Medical Registration: Unconditional registration as a Medical Practitioner with AHPRA (or eligible for registration via approved specialist pathways).
- Clinical Stage: Completed a minimum of two core years of Advanced Training in Nephrology (suitable for third-year advanced trainees, post-graduate fellows, or new-graduate consultant nephrologists).
