Your Role
As a Civil Engineer in the Army Reserve, you’ll get to use your existing qualifications in exciting new ways, applying your specialist skills to energetic military environments. You’ll plan, design, coordinate, control and deliver a range of infrastructure engineering projects.
This is a great opportunity to challenge yourself and work in exciting new environments, without compromising your current career goals.
Your duties may include:
- aiding the community in humanitarian efforts
- construction of field defences and obstacles
- military and training duties
- project managing the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, airfields, sea terminals, railways, buildings and bridges
- providing terrain assessment advice
- provision of construction materials and essential services such as water, electricity, and sewerage disposal
- general soldiering duties, such as manning defensive positions, patrolling, traffic control, navigation, and camouflaging of vehicles and field equipment.

On completion of your initial military and employment training, you could earn at least $283/day tax-free.
The pay you receive in the Army Reserve goes straight into your pocket with no deductions for tax, and it increases as you gain seniority and experience. Additional amounts are paid for time spent on exercises and deployments.
Eligibility:
For this role, you must:
- Be at least 17 at the time of enlistment and an Australian Citizen.
- If you are not an Australian Citizen you may still be eligible to join the ADF if you meet certain criteria, please visit the ADF Careers Eligibility Page for more details
- Be reasonably fit and healthy. Keeping fit is a big part of joining the ADF. You’ll need to pass a physical fitness test before you join, but don’t worry, we'll give you tips to help you prepare.
- Be able to successfully obtain a security clearance.
- Hold a Bachelor of Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Have had training in a branch of engineering with the practical experience required for graduate membership of the Institution of Engineers Australia (IEAust), or another chartered institution of similar status.
