Australia

Eleven Degrees is leading the search for a Policy and Fact-Checking Lead for a philanthropically funded Australian organisation working to shift public attitudes to energy and climate. The organisation needs to be clear, quick and right about energy policy in everything it says.

The Policy and Fact-Checking Lead sits at the centre of a fast-moving team working on some of the most contested debates in Australian politics. You make complicated energy policy easy to understand, fast, and you help shape the arguments before anything gets made. When an announcement lands or a dodgy number is doing the rounds, you're the person the team turns to, and you have an answer the same day.

Position: Permanent, 0.6 to 1.0 FTE. Hours will be agreed with the right person.

Salary: $90,000–$120,000 full-time equivalent (pro rata), plus superannuation

Location: Remote within Australia, with occasional travel for team gatherings (costs covered)

Reporting to: Chief Executive The role

- Work alongside the creative and data leads from the start, so the arguments are built to hold up.
- Research and write short, plain-English briefs on energy, electricity and climate policy, and keep them up to date.
- Turn dense reports, market data and announcements into a few clear sentences anyone can follow.
- Check facts and claims in draft material, often within a few hours.
- Keep a well-organised library of verified facts and their sources for the whole team to use.
- Give the team a quick read on new policy announcements the day they land.
- Track federal and state policy, market reports and regulator decisions, and flag what matters.
- Keep across new research and analysis from think tanks, universities and partner organisations.
- Advise colleagues on how an issue is likely to land with people who don't follow energy policy.

About you

- Deep knowledge of Australian energy or climate policy, from work in advocacy, a think tank, research, government, parliament, a regulator,

energy market analysis or journalism.
- You can explain complicated policy in plain language to people with no background in it.
- You work fast and accurately to tight deadlines, including same-day turnaround.
- You source everything, and record the source where someone else can find it.
- You know the difference between a claim that is true and a claim that will stand up to public scrutiny.
- You give clear, constructive advice to colleagues, including under deadline pressure.
- Healthy scepticism. You've seen enough contested figures to know how numbers get spun, by everyone.
- You're practical. When a line doesn't stand up, you help find the version that does.
- Former journalists, particularly from energy, economics or politics rounds, are encouraged to apply. Working knowledge of the National Electricity Market is a plus.

Working here

- 25 days' annual leave (pro rata), and the office closes on full pay between Christmas and New Year.
- Flexible days and hours, agreed with you. School-hours arrangements suit this role, and other part time work is welcome as long as any conflicts of interest are managed.
- A small, experienced team, and the chance to shape a new organisation from its first year.

Selection processInterviews are built around real situations from the role, and shortlisted candidates complete a short, paid task. The standard six-month probation period applies. Only those residing in and with working rights in Australia will be considered.

- This role is open to everyone, and we'd especially like to hear from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. Don't hesitate to apply if you fit most but not all job criteria.
