Bulletpoint | Ru0026D Tax Consultant
Melbourne
Melbourne | Full time | On-site | $100,000–$130,000 total package
If the best part of consulting is talking to clients, understanding what they’re building and working out what actually matters, this role is built around more of that.
You’ll spend your time interviewing founders and technical teams, asking better questions, managing client relationships and using your judgement - with support around you for the finance, technical writing, research and admin.
What the job actually looks like A lot of R&D; Tax consulting is investigative work.
You sit down with founders, engineers, developers and technical teams and work out what they were actually trying to build, what they didn’t know at the start, what they tested, what failed and what changed.
Then you apply the R&D; Tax framework and work out what matters for the claim.
The hard part isn’t filling in a template. It’s understanding something complicated quickly, asking the next good question and knowing when an answer doesn’t quite stack up.
You’ll have support around you
We’ve deliberately built a team around the consultant.
You’ll have support with finance, technical writing, research, uploading and administration. You’ll still review things, write when it makes sense and get into the detail when your judgement is needed.
We also use AI and structured systems to reduce lower-value work and improve the quality of delivery.
The aim is simple: more of your time on the work that actually needs you.
If you’re new to R&D; Tax
You do not need previous R&D; Tax experience for the Consultant role.
We’re interested in people from consulting, accounting, engineering, science, software, technology or other technical and analytical backgrounds.
We can teach you the R&D; Tax framework. What matters more is whether you can understand complicated things quickly, communicate clearly, ask good follow-up questions and use judgement.
If you already work in R&D; Tax
If you’re technically strong but still spending too much of your week writing plans, filling templates and doing production work yourself, this role is designed differently.
You’ll have more responsibility for the client, more support around the production work and a clearer path towards managing people and larger relationships.
More than just technical work
As you develop, you’ll get exposure to client ownership, networking, referrals, sales, personal branding, marketing and how a growing specialist consultancy actually works.
For a Consultant, the next step is Senior Consultant. For an experienced Senior Consultant, there is a path towards Tax Manager-level responsibility as the team grows.
Why on-site?
This is an on-site Melbourne role.
A lot of the learning happens in the side conversations - sitting in on calls, asking a question across the room and seeing how other people handle things.
If you want to work remotely most of the week, this probably isn’t the right role.
