Primary objective

Develop and implement policy initiatives and projects to strengthen the Northern Territory’s engagement with international priority partners across political, economic and cultural areas.

Context Statement The Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade is the Northern Territory Government’s lead agency for industry development, working to grow the Territory’s economy to $40 billion by 2030 through the growth of sustainable and globally competitive industries. The Strategic Engagement team contributes to supporting this goal by leading the strategic and diplomatic engagement to strengthen the position of the Territory and to facilitate sustainable economic growth.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide critical, evidenced-based analysis and strategic advice on the Northern Territory’s international engagement

with international priority markets.

Assist in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the International Engagement Strategy 2022-2026 and

individual market engagement plans.
1. Develop and implement internationally focused policy initiatives and projects that support the government’s economic

development strategy and key priorities.
1. Coordinate and manage ministerial visits overseas and inbound visits by international delegations.
2. Represent and promote the Northern Territory Government’s interests at business, industry and intergovernmental

(including foreign government and organisations) meetings.
1. Build and sustain positive relationships with local and international stakeholders across government and industry.
2. Prepare high level responses and correspondence for Ministerial briefings, Cabinet submissions, speeches, reports and

presentations.

Selection Criteria

Essential

1. Extensive experience in research and critical analysis, and the provision of high-level policy advice.
2. Demonstrated high level project management skills, including the ability to co-ordinate, prioritise, negotiate and liaise

with private and public sector stakeholders to achieve outcomes.
1. Well-developed oral and written communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills, and ability to prepare high

level reports, briefings and correspondence for a wide range of audiences.
1. High degree of motivation and ability to work independently or as part of a team to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
2. Experience in leading and coordination of inbound and outbound delegations.
3. Understanding of local, national and international economic and political issues as they relate to the Northern Territory’s

engagement in the region.
1. Commitment to flexible, collaborative, cutting-edge and problem-solving approaches.
2. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.

Desirable

1. Tertiary qualifications in International Relations/Business or a related discipline.
2. International business experience and/or foreign language skills.
