About the Opportunity
Based in Henderson, the Project Controller plays a key role in supporting the successful delivery of complex maritime projects. You will provide cost control, analysis, and reporting to ensure projects are delivered within budget and aligned to financial objectives.
Working within Austal's Programs function, you will contribute to cost tracking, forecasting, and performance reporting in an Earned Value Management (EVM) environment. This role offers the opportunity to partner with Project Managers, Finance, Engineering, and Operations to provide insights that support informed decision-making and improve project outcomes.
This is an excellent opportunity for a developing professional with 2-5 years' experience in cost control or project finance, looking to grow their career in a structured project delivery environment.

What's Involved
- Assist in development of CWBS and budget estimates for all control accounts, work packages and cost codes, as per EVMS processes
- Work closely with Control Account Managers in preparing accurate budgets and forecasts
- Monitor project expenditures, control costs, and ensure alignment with budget and schedule.
- Analyse cost performance and variances, communicate variance/risk drivers and support variance resolution
- Track and trend earned value, actual costs and forecast costs against approved budget and spot overruns early
- Establish, monitor and control Performance Measurement Baselines (PMB)
- Implement baseline changes in accordance with approved EVMS process and ensure traceability on approved budget and Estimate At Completion (EAC) changes Ongoing.
- Provide accurate, complete and timely project controls data in an EVMS environment as per the approved cadence
- Combine raw data into clear, decision-ready visuals and define what "on track" really means
- Review and Distribute Project Controls Dashboard on a weekly/monthly basis
- Ensure data accuracy and validation before publication of reports
- Provide updates to project team regarding the project overall progress status, KPIs and forecasts across schedule, budget, cost performance and risks.
- Review actual vs budget and forecast reports per control account and explain variances and enable forecasting.
- Integrated Controls Management.
- Maintain project control data on EVMS and associated system such as IFS, Contruent and P6.
- Ensure control accounts and cost codes remain integrated with scope, CWBS, estimates, schedule, risk, resourcing, and costs through common IDs to support a cohesive and overarching project controls view for the program.
- Develop controls capability across cost, scope, pricing & estimation, resource management and program change variation as part of an Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
- Identify, analyse, register and assess program risks and opportunities and evaluate impact on schedules, costs, and project outcomes.
- Develop scenario plans, impact assessments and predictive analyses to create options for program management.
- Develop risk mitigation and contingency plans in collaboration with CAMs and other stakeholders.
- Track and report on risk status, ensuring proactive measures to address issues as they arise.
- Review planned vs. available resources (internal and subcontractor) and identify risks and opportunities.
- Make project management and CAMs aware of all budget overruns and risk & opportunities in a timely manner
- Serve as a key point of contact for project controls matters in the project.
- Adhere to cost control processes and Earned Value Management System (EVMS) standards, assist with operationalising them
- Identify process and data flow improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and program effectiveness.

You'll Need
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Engineering, or a related field
- 2-5 years' experience in cost control, project controls, or financial analysis within a project-based environment
- Sound knowledge of cost management principles, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Working experience with Earned Value Management System (EVMS) environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in project scheduling, planning, and critical path analysis.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and exposure to financial or project reporting tools
- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
- Eligibility to obtain a Defence Security Clearance
Desirable
- Experience in Primavera P6 and/or IFS
- Experience in Power BI/Query/Pivot
- Experience in the shipbuilding, manufacturing, or construction
- Exposure to Defence projects or Commonwealth of Australia reporting frameworks
- Contract knowledge on claims, variations and payment milestones
- Working towards or holding a relevant certification (e.g., AACE, PMI, or project controls accreditation) is an advantage.
