The Opportunity
As a Seasonal Ranger based at Halls Gap, you will work as part of a team delivering on-ground services and projects that help keep parks safe, accessible and enjoyable while protecting their natural and cultural values.
Your work may include conservation programs focused on pest plants, pest animals and threatened species. You may also help construct and maintain roads, walking tracks, campgrounds and day visitor areas, support compliance and enforcement activities, deliver education programs and engage with visitors, volunteers, community members and licensed tour operators.
This is a hands-on opportunity to apply your skills in an outdoor environment and build practical experience across park operations, conservation and visitor services. The role may require weekend and rostered work, working in remote locations, driving long distances on unsealed roads and walking long distances in forests and parks. An appropriate level of fitness is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver on-ground land, conservation, infrastructure and visitor-management services.
- Support pest plant, pest animal and threatened-species programs.
- Assist with maintaining roads, walking tracks, campgrounds and visitor areas.
- Provide visitors and stakeholders with clear and accurate park information.
- Work safely and identify, manage and report hazards and operational risks.
- Contribute to cultural heritage protection and partnerships with Traditional Owners.
- Engage positively with park users, volunteers, community groups and operators.
- Apply sound judgement and initiative to resolve local operational issues.
- Contribute to a safe, respectful, inclusive and high-performing team.
- Identify opportunities to improve park services and visitor experiences.
About You
You enjoy practical outdoor work and are committed to protecting natural and cultural values while providing positive experiences for park visitors.
You work effectively as part of a team and can complete routine and moderately complex on-ground tasks under general supervision. You demonstrate sound judgement, initiative and reliability, with a strong commitment to safety, integrity and professionalism.
You communicate confidently with colleagues, visitors, volunteers and community stakeholders. You are adaptable, comfortable working outdoors and prepared to undertake weekend, rostered and remote work when required.
You'll bring
- Relevant qualifications or skills in environmental science, natural resource management, conservation and land management, outdoor education, community engagement, carpentry or another trade.
- Experience delivering routine and moderately complex on-ground services or projects under general supervision.
- A current Victorian Driver Licence.
- Robust verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to prepare clear written communications.
- The ability to contribute to a safe, respectful and inclusive team.
- Sound judgement, initiative and practical problem-solving skills.
- Experience working constructively with park visitors, community members or volunteers.
- Reliability in meeting deadlines and delivering agreed work requirements.
- The fitness and capability to undertake outdoor work in remote and sometimes arduous conditions.
