Job description
Trojan Rail is seeking an experienced Driver Trainer to join our rail training team, delivering high-quality training and operational development across our rail workforce.
This is a hands-on training role for an established rail professional who is equally comfortable delivering in the classroom, coaching employees in the field and working within live rail operations.
You'll work predominantly from Newcastle, supporting new-to-industry training programs, practical development and operational competency across our rail workforce, with opportunities to work across regional and interstate locations.

About the Role
As a Driver Trainer, you'll be responsible for delivering and supporting structured rail training across classroom, practical and operational environments.
You'll work closely with new-to-industry learners as they progress from initial training through to workplace development, as well as supporting experienced rail employees with ongoing competency and operational development.
This role requires more than strong operational knowledge. We're looking for a trainer who understands how to engage learners, adapt their delivery, provide effective coaching and make sound assessment decisions.
You'll also remain connected to operations, including supporting employees in the field and participating in revenue services where required.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering classroom,
practical and on-the-job rail training
- Training, coaching and mentoring new-to-industry learners
- Supporting Drivers Under Instruction and operational employees
- Conducting competency-based assessment within your authorised scope
- Monitoring learner progress and providing constructive feedback
- Supporting practical and operational competency development
- Working revenue services as required
- Preparing for training delivery and maintaining quality training resources
- Completing assessment, marking and training documentation accurately and within required timeframes
- Maintaining current operational and training and assessment capability
- Contributing to validation and continuous improvement of training and assessment practices
About You
- An experienced rail trainer who understands that quality training is about more than presenting information.
- Know how to read a learner, recognise when someone isn't understanding a concept and adjust your approach without compromising competency or safety standards.
- Organised, accountable and able to work independently while maintaining robust relationships with learners, operational teams, management and clients
- Take pride in developing safe, capable and confident rail employees.
What You'll Bring
To be considered for this opportunity, you'll need:
- TLI42622 Certificate IV in Train Driving, relevant equivalent qualification or vocational competencies acceptable to the RTO
- TAE40116 or TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, or another accepted training and assessment credential
- Demonstrated experience delivering rail training and/or competency-based assessment
- Strong freight rail operational experience
- Current and relevant rail industry knowledge
- Experience coaching and mentoring employees in operational environments
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Sound organisational and time-management skills
- High attention to detail when completing training and assessment documentation
- Current driver's licence
You'll also need to meet relevant Rail Safety Worker health assessment and operational competency requirements.
Travel and Flexibility
The majority of training is based in Newcastle, however the role supports rail operations and training programs across multiple locations.
You'll need to be comfortable travelling regionally and interstate and working away from home when required. Some training programs may require extended periods away.
A daily meal allowance is provided when working away from home, with a company vehicle available for work requiring travel.
As with most operational rail roles, some flexibility around working hours and weekends will be required.
